Albert George Edwards

December 2, 1921 - June 18, 2012

Having lived a beautiful life, Albert George Edwards of Kaslo, BC left us on June 18, 2012 in his 91st year. Many knew Albert as someone who could build anything, fix anything and who would lend a hand to family, friends and neighbours. He was their go-to guy for repairs, trouble shooting, carpentry, parts, skate sharpening and gardening advice. Albert always sought practical solutions to resolve problems and it was his philosophy to never pay for something he could do (and without a doubt, do better) himself. He loved carpentry, fishing, hunting, gardening, picking huckleberries, playing cards, and camping. He built the best campfires and taught his kids and grandkids to do the same. He always enjoyed having family and friends around, especially when it meant a camping outing in the RVs. And, those who knew him will be unable to suppress a smile as they recall his mischievous grin or the way he would place his tongue on his lip while concentrating on a problem.

Albert was born to a family of 10 in Cluny, Alberta on December 2, 1921. He farmed with his father in Gem, Alberta until he moved to Kaslo, BC in 1947. Crossing the Rockies, he was surprised to find that the landscape was not flat like Alberta on the other side. In Kaslo, he met his beloved Irene and they were married in 1950. They made their first home in Zincton, BC where Albert worked in the mill for Sheep Creek Gold Mines Ltd. Albert and Irene moved back to Kaslo in 1953 when he was hired by the Ministry of Highways, working on the road maintenance crew until he retired in 1981.

In retirement, he managed camps for forest fire crews, helped neighbours and friends with their home projects and completed various jobs around town. Albert was a member of the Kaslo Garden Club at which time they planted trees along Front Street in front of the Moyie and Kaslo Beach. He was one of the early directors of the Kaslo Credit Union. As a member of the Kaslo Victorian Hospital Board of Directors, Albert led a fund raising campaign to the tune of “Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head” during planning and construction of the new Kaslo Victorian Hospital which opened in 1971. He was also on the Board of Directors for the Kaslo and District Arena Association during planning and construction of the current skating and curling arena. Albert built two homes in Kaslo, both entirely by himself, but with full honesty and integrity, he would want you to know that in the second house, he did not build the fireplace.

A loving and caring husband, he was never shy to be seen walking hand in hand with Irene. Albert and Irene had 5 children, Don (Wendy) Edwards, Glenn (Marie) Edwards, Joy (Howard) Fletcher, Leah (Roy) Honkanen, and Connie (Jeff) Hum. They have 10 grandchildren, Dianna, Anita, Alecia, Leanne, Bergen, Kahle, Kelsy, Whitney, Garett and Nicola; and seven great grandchildren, Tyler, Sage, Jamie, Dannika, Kaidence, Chelsea and Bentley. They will all remember him for the toys, games and tables he built for them, the things he taught them, raspberry picking, camping trips and the experiences he provided, but most of all, for his love, affection and the importance he placed on family. In addition to Irene, his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, he is survived by his sister Grace (John) Bell of Kelowna, BC. A Celebration of Life was held on June 22, 2012 at the Kaslo Legion Hall.

We never met Mr. Edwards but do know two of his daughters, Joy and Leah. Based on how they spoke of their dad, he sounded like someone we would have really liked, especially as a fellow camper and nature lover. Condolences to the family from Elaine and Ted.

I just wanted to say for the little time I was in the Edwards family Albert & Irene were very kind & family oriented. Loved loved their family very much & welcomed the newcomer in with open arms. I remember Albert always in his shop building toys for the grandkids or making his famous fold up/down tables. I believe I just bought one of his few that he last built & will take care of it & treasure it with all my heart & think of him when I’m out camping everytime. I also want to say that I’m so glad that he stayed strong enough in the last few months to meet his great grandson Bentley, which is my pride & joy. All we can do now is keep looking at all the pics.of Bentley & Poppi together & Nanni of course and think happy thoughts. Kelsy & I will make sure to share many good memories & stories of Poppi. Bentley will be caring on the Edwards name & I’m sure Poppi was so excited & proud. HUGS to everyone. My thought are with u all.

I hold many fond memories of walking by the house every day on my way to school, and spending hours there with his lovely granddaughter Anita. Love and sunshine~
