Albert John Ratcliffe

January 7, 1953 - November 19, 2013

Tribute

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our beloved Bert Ratcliffe on November 19th. He was a wonderful son, brother, cousin, uncle, and great uncle. Born in Vernon, BC, on January 7th, 1953 to Francis Joseph and Margaret Lucinda Ratcliffe. Bert grew up in Kelowna and spent the majority of his career with CN in Montreal, QC. A great lover of trains, music, and especially friends, family, and the great outdoors, he was happiest on his river canoe trips back East and day hikes here in the West Kootenay (as he insisted we call the region).

Bert is survived by siblings Jim, Mary (Jerry), Hugh (Maureen), Elizabeth, and Jeanine, step-siblings Maurice (Jeanne), Kathy (Tun), and Don (Claire), as well as many, many cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents Joe and Margaret (Steve), siblings Caroline (Al) and Vince, and nephew Jesse. After the passing of Vince in 2008, Bert made sure that his late brother’s children, Jeremy, Joel, and Julia, always had a home to come back to in Nelson during the holidays and all the times between.

From: Garth Burbank
Relation: long term family friend

So very sorry to hear of the loss of you brother and uncle. Our families are linked by many years. I have fond memories of Bert from our Kelowna days as well as the too infrequent times here in Nelson. My heart goes out to you all.

From: Robert Dods
Relation: Friend

So sorry to hear of your loss. I was one of the Gourmet Paddlers that did the canoe trips in the East that Bert loved doing. I will always cherish those trips.

From: Donald Camacho
Relation: Canoe trip buddies

“Panther-like he lept from the canoe” The river, a canoe on the shore, Bert in a chair next to the camp fire, a cup in his hand, The glow of the fire dancing in his eyes.

My condolences to the Family.

From: Sandra Finn
Relation: Friend - Co-worker

My deepest sympathies to your family. I worked with Bert for many years. It was a pleasure to work with him; he was always very kind and had a great sense of humour. I am so sad to hear of his passing at such a young age.

From: Tony Ferlisi
Relation: CN Co-Worker

My deepest sympathies to the family.

From: Mike Gorodensky and Joan Watt
Relation: Hallandale Beach, Florida

Please accept our condolences. We both were colleagues of Bert’s at CN in Montreal. We remember his ready smile and easy good humor. We enjoyed the time we worked with him. We had great times at our team (Grays) softball games and especially good drinking times after the games. His is a life lost too soon.

From: Judi Edmison
Relation: My boss at CN in Montreal

In the early 2000’s Chris (whom Bert affectionately referred to as “the Nerd”) and I (a.k.a. “Blondie”) worked with Bert (payback time: “Senior Moment”) and Derv in eBusiness at CN. He was a great boss and mentor. Encouraging, tough and ruled with an iron sense of humour. We laughed so much and at the same time got a lot of stuff DONE! I will remember his love for adventure (some of the stories he told us about the Gourmet Paddlers adventures were outrageous!) and skiing with his neice and nephew and hiking up insanely high mountains. He would sometimes send me a photo of him atop a mountain with vista around him, which I would open at my desk, in my cubicle, breathing recycled air, in a highrise… and this make me sooo jealous. I am so sorry for your loss. He will be missed.

From: Derbhla Dunne
Relation: Manager & Mentor at CN

My deepest condolences to all of Bert’s family. I am deeply saddened that Bert was taken from this world so young. He was one of the best bosses I ever had and he encouraged everyone in his team to go far and have fun doing it. We laughed a lot and I cherish those years at CN. I was so happy for him that he was back in Kelowna living the good life and the outdoor lifestyle of hiking and paddling that he loved so much. The world just lost one of the good guys.
