Alvin Michael Gerun

June 8, 1942 – September 25, 2020

It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Alvin Michael Gerun on September 25, 2020 in Nelson, BC.

He leaves behind his loving son, Michael (Lua) and grandchildren Hailee and Brayden, along with partner Gloria Ligget, brothers, Lloyd (Gladys) and Raymond, sister Debbie (Wayne) Wicheruk, nephews Mark (Tammy) and Trevor Wicheruk, niece Raelyn (Kaur) Pavnee and great nieces Isabell and Audrey.

Al was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and moved with his family to Cranbrook, BC in 1946. Upon graduation from Mount Baker Secondary School in Cranbrook, he attended the University of British Columbia, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Geology, and later founded Gerex Developments company after working a long career in mining.

Al loved to read and enjoyed the nine winters he spent in Mesa, Arizona.

The family wishes to express their thanks to Dr. Malpass, Dr. Newth and Dr. Finch (Kelowna).

There will not be a funeral service at this time; a celebration of life will be announced at a later date. You are invited to leave a personal message of condolence by visiting the family’s register at thompsonfs.ca

Dear Mike and Gloria,
We were shocked and saddened by the news of Al’s passing. He always greeted one with a smile, and a positive attitude. He was humble about his accomplishments. We were so happy for Al that he found such joy these past years.

with sympathy to Al’s family. I have known Al for years in business and friendly basis.
I remember our conversations about his mining and quarry business and admired his business abilities. I found him quick witted and engaging. Our conversations in regards to politics were especially memorable.
He will be greatly missed.

From: Fiona Katay
Relation: Colleague

On behalf of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, I wish to extend our deepest condolences to Al’s family and friends.
I had the pleasure of spending some time with Al over the past few years at the Chamber of Mines, events, and on visits to his quarry, and always looked forward to seeing him. His passion shone through in everything he did, and he was a pleasure to speak with. I particularly enjoyed seeing his eyes light up when he was talking to the groups of students on tour during the prospecting course, and how excited he’d get when talking about his rocks. He was a wealth of knowledge and experience in the mining community, and will be remembered fondly, and dearly missed by many. He was a true miner, and had a heart of gold.
