Anna Thyer
June 1, 1931 - July 5, 2019
Tribute
Anna passed away suddenly and peacefully in her home on July 5th. She was born to German parents in the Ukraine and moved with her family to Canada in the late 1940s, settling first in Manitoba and then in BC. She trained as a nurse and then worked in Europe and Canada until she met and married Norman in Vancouver, where daughter Anita was born. Linda was born in Montreal and shortly afterwards the young family moved to Nelson where they remained. David was adopted into the family a few years later.
Anna loved her natural environment and honed her gardening and hobby farming skills at the Sproule Creek home. Both she and Norman were active members of the community and passionate advocates for social justice and environmental issues. They loved hiking, skiing and snowshoeing. Anna enjoyed music, dance and a variety of crafts and travel.
Recently Anna’s decline in health brought her to the Nelson Commons, where she frequented the Co-op daily for their hot meals and varied community, and deeply appreciated the friendly staff. She will be missed by her family and many friends. An informal celebration of life will be held Saturday, August 17th at 11am, at Kokanee Creek Provincial Park, in the Day-Use area picnic tables towards Sandspit Beach

Everyone welcome, and feel free to bring a picnic lunch and your hiking shoes for a short hike afterwards!

I first met Anna through her husband Norm (who I first met at Notre Dame University in Nelson in 1973 when I was a student there). After to Norm passed I would occasionally meet Anna and got to know her deep philosophical love for the planet. Most recently I would meet Anna at the Co-op when I came to shop, and she would join me in the cafeteria. Recently we talked about the fact that people might finally be waking up to the realities of climate change. I will miss our little chats with Anna, and feel very fortunate to have known such a caring women.

Relation: Anna was a co-op member, neighbour, and friend.
On behalf of the Kootenay Co-op staff, I extend condolences to Anna’s family. In many ways, many of us considered Anna part of our family, too. She was a daily presence in the store, and she had kind words and wisdom to share with anyone who had the good fortune to speak with her. Lately, she shared with many of us her appreciation for young people’s capacity and engagement in environmental issues, which were dear to her.
Staff had these additional comments to share:
Anna was a unique and special person. Glad to have known her.

Anita and Linda – so sorry to hear Anna has passed away. I thought it was a brilliant idea for her to move into the Commons where she could head downstairs (in her slippers!) and meet friends for dinner – good, organic food such as she was used to growing at Sproule Creek. Such a warm, wise and generous woman. I told a friend who lives in the Commons (apparently you met her in the elevator) that she should watch out for Anna – a treasure.
