Anthony Austen Salway

December 13, 1943 - June 13, 2012

Dr. Tony (Anthony) Salway P.Geo. was born in Weston-Super-Mare, England, December 13, 1943. After receiving an Honours B.Sc. in Physics and an M.Sc. in Geophysics from the University of Birmingham, he came to Calgary to work in the oil industry in 1966. An avid rock climber, skier and mountaineer, he met Judy Moyse climbing Mt. Schaefer in Yoho National Park in 1969. After a brief working trip to the University of Southampton in 1970, they were married in 1972 (the only way to get a 2 week backpacking vacation from Tony’s new employer!). Trying to combine work with the mountains, Tony earned a Ph.D. in avalanche science from UBC in 1976 and decided to set up a business offering snow cat assisted ski touring and avalanche instruction in Appledale. Since his Ph.D. studies had included forest hydrology, he began working on protection of local watersheds, and offered consulting services to industry, government and public interest groups, and geoscience assessments for property development. He served 8 years on the Council of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC, followed by a year as Vice President. He was ecstatic when his daughter Natasha was born in 1984. They shared an interest in theatre, performing together in Capitol Theatre Christmas pantomimes, with Rossland Light Opera Players and the Nelson Community Opera. He was very proud when she graduated from the University of Victoria’s theatre program with a B.F.A. in Acting. He also encouraged Natasha’s interest in horses and show jumping. He was predeceased by his father, mother and middle sister Judy and survived by his twin sister Anne, youngest sister Rosemary and brother David, all in England. Of his beloved German Shepherds, he is survived by Gimli and Goldie but suffered the loss of Mistaya, Balu, Makalu, Sultan and Sheba. In response to one of his last wishes to climb Mt. Gimli, Natasha plans to take his ashes to a final resting spot on that mountain. He talked of having a party when he got out of hospital, so in lieu of a funeral, his friends are invited to a celebration of his life on June 29. Follow the link for details. Donations in lieu of flowers should be made to the Kootenay Lake Hospital, where he received such excellent care. Thanks also to Dr. Murray, the many wonderful paramedics who came to his assistance and to all his friends in Nelson, who visited him in hospital and cheered him up so much.

Tony faithfully recorded the theatre scene in Nelson for as many years as I can recall and was always ready when a good laugh or a pint was involved. I’m fortunate to have shared many of both with him. My love and condolences to his family and many friends.

Tony & I were in a RLOP show together (Crazy for You) about 7 yrs ago. It was the first time I’d met Tony and he always had me laughing. We had such a great time acting/singing together. He was a wonderful person, always full of energy and fun. My sincere condolences to your family.

Tony’s big voice, big presence and big personality were the first thing you may have noticed, but there was much more to him than that. He was a kind, brave man with a very big heart. I pray comfort for Natasha and Judy as his absence now leaves a big gap in their lives.
