Aurélien "Al" Pierre Dupuis

July 17, 1929 - May 31, 2020

Aurélien Dupuis (July 17, 1929 – May 31, 2020)

Born on a small farm in Noelville Ontario, Aurélien was the twelfth of thirteen children. His mother died when he was 5 years old; he and two other siblings were placed in an orphanage until they were older.

In April 1959, he married the love of his life, Elaine Goulet. They lived in Sudbury, Ontario and raised three children, Marc-Aurèle, Linda and Cindée. They are now the proud grand-parents of Kalil, Sahana, Kirin and Kai.

In 1991, they built a beautiful retirement home in the Kootenays to be closer to their children who had all moved west. Aurélien was a true nature lover, and spent most of his time outside tending his cherished gardens, building rock walls, and managing their 12 acre forest property.

An artist and storyteller at heart, Aurélien had a great love for the French language, which motivated the writing of over a dozen books. He had a beautiful tenor voice, and was always asked to sing at family weddings. There was always a sweet childhood song in his heart, and he often seized the moment to sing one to his beloveds.

Aurélien was a gentle, patient and sensitive soul. He will be dearly missed by family and friends.

I was blessed to have the pleasure of knowing Aurélien over the last decade. He touched everyone with his kindness, quick wit, and humour. You never knew when he would burst into song with his delightful tenor voice. A gem of a man 💕

Al was a beloved neighbour on Wills Road. We will treasure the memories of sitting on the swing in their yard with our young daughter, she was really fond of him. Al was always ready with a smile and a story. Sending warm thoughts to Elaine and the rest of Al’s family.

Relation: I did some work for him

Elaine. I am so sorry for your loss. I am the English guy that came and did several days work at your property about 15 years ago. I remember moving big round rocks in the trunk of your car and chopping firewood. We would stop for lunch and you would feed us wonderful food. Al introduced me to the delights of buttermilk ! Something I still enjoy to this day. My thoughts are with you .

Relation: A family friend.

Il etais une fois un homme, named Monsieur Dupuis. As a shy 12 year old girl, best buddy to his youngest child, I have fond memories of spending time in the family home from age 12 to 17. M. Dupuis was a man of few words, and a man of many words. Always very carefully and deliberately chosen. And sometimes a little nerve wracking for this young listening audience, and nervous about screwing up your french when a question comes around. 🙂 I remember times around the kitchen table where he spoke with “Cinde” and I. There always appeared to be tremendous thought placed behind the words he was to articulate. And there were-and with some fanciful ideas described in quiet, detailed and colourful ways I had not been exposed to. In a ‘meat and potatoes’ town, les Dupuis were a wonderful and unique family and I was lucky to have spent 5 years in the periphery. Those visits and perspectives were all positive influences in my young life, and values and practices in the Dupuis home I will always cherish. Your husband and Dad and Granfather was an original, and clearly sought to teach you values and practices which have lead you to live unique lives caring for this planet in your own ways. Madame Dupuis, I am sorry for the loss of your lifelong companion. I hope every day you are blessed with the warmth of his presence. To Cinde-Jaya, Linda and Marc I am sorry for the loss of your Dad. The work you and the lives you live I see as influenced by him, and we are in better circumstances because of that. To his grandkids, my hope is that you are able to recall sufficient memories and teachings of your grandfather so that you may apply some of them in your lives, and feel richer and stronger because of it. Love and warmth during this time, and moving forward, la fille de Hanmer. 😉 xox …

To Elaine and Family, my condolences to you on Aurelien’s passing, though we know he is just going on on the path. I would like to have heard him sing one of those childhood songs. Let’s get together Elaine, when you are ready. Love and Light, Phyllis
