Cameron Shan Mah

September 24, 1946 - June 8, 2019

MAH – Cameron was born Mah Kin Shum in Tin Sum, Canton, China on September 24, 1946. Cameron passed peacefully from this life on the afternoon of June 8, 2019 after a gradual decline in health. He was surrounded and supported by his loving family and caregivers during the last days of his life.

He arrived in Canada in 1959, settling first in Castlegar, BC, where he learned his culinary skills working at the Marlane Grill. Later he married his wife Jayne, and in 1967 they settled in Nelson, BC and raised four children; Ginger, Tracy, David and Dennis. Cameron cooked in many Chinese restaurants but his name and reputation was more closely associated with the KC Restaurant. After working tirelessly as a chef for many years he finally retired in 2001 and lived the remainder of his life in beautiful Nelson.

Cameron enjoyed cooking for his family and friends. He volunteered much of his free time with The Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge 641. He also loved fishing, carpentry, poker and socializing with his coffee friends at the food court of The Chahko Mika Mall.

Cameron was predeceased by his father, Yew Mah and also his mother, Tsui Ying Mah.

He is survived by his wife Jayne of Nelson, two daughters; Ginger of Nelson and Tracy (Greg) of Burnaby as well as two sons; David of Castlegar and Dennis (Kari) of Surrey, BC. He is also survived by one grandchild, Meela of Burnaby, four brothers; Brian (Debbie) of Burnaby, Ronald (Alice) of Trail, Russell (Eileen) of Nelson, Roger of Calgary and one sister, Stella of Las Vegas.

He will also be sadly missed by his brothers-in-law; Tim (Susan) Jay, Terry (Anne) Kwan, Tom (Roz) Jay, Jim (Deanna) Jay and York Jay as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held at the Chapel of Thompson Funeral Service; 613 Ward St, Nelson on Friday, June 21, 2019 at 11:00am with Reverend Ken Siemens officiating; burial to follow at Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery.

Cameron’s family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Milde, Dr. Tuvel and the many nurses and staff at Kootenay Lake Hospital for their compassionate care while he was ill. Cameron will be dearly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Cameron may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of BC https://www.heartandstroke.ca/get-involved/donate or to BCDiabetes.ca

From: Rita Berglund
Relation: Work

Jayne and family so sorry to hear of the passing of Cam. I have many fond memories of working with him at the KC Restaurant, almost all of our family worked with him. A few years ago my sisters and I stopped to see him in Castlegar and he was prepared to hire us on the spot, we had a laugh over that. My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time Rita Berglund (Zieverink)

It is with much sadness, the BATTING family from Castlegar, send our deepest sympathy to Jayne and Family. Cameron was considered part of the family after many years of a close friendship with Bob and the rest of the clan. He spent many hours at our home sharing meals and good times. Our Mother Anne who recently passed, was very fond of Cameron. He will be sadly missed but forever in our hearts. RIP Cameron

From: Janet Ritchey
Relation: former employee

I am so sorry to hear of Cam’s passing. He was a lovely man and was one of my bosses when I was a student and worked at the KC Restaurant. He was kind and supportive and a gentleman. It was such a treat to see him again when he was part of the group which catered my niece’s wedding five years ago in Nelson. My condolences to his family.

Condolences to Jayne and Cameron’s family. Cam was an integral part of Nelson for many decades in the KC Cafe. His smile, delicious foods and presence in town will be missed. Take care.

From: Brent Waite
Relation: Distant family friend

I send condolences to the family of Cameron Mah, part of a kind and generous family that impressed upon me the values of friendship and community when I lived there 40 yers ago.

To all that have gathered during this difficult time may you find strength and comfort in being together.

From: Sandi Oorthuis
Relation: Cam was my favourite boss

Dearest Jayne and family: I was deeply saddened to see that Cameron had passed away. Never have I cherished a boss so much as I had while working at the KC restaurant. Cameron was so gentle natured, soft spoken and kind and that showed just days before his death when he called me to give condolences on my mother’s passing. I was shocked that he thought so much of me to take the time to do this. Whenever I think of Cam I can’t help but smile and I hope that all your memories of him will help your families to heal. I will miss him dearly.

From: Thomas Skinner
Relation: Family friend

I’m so, so sorry to hear of the loss of Cam. He has always been a dear friend of our family, and the KC was one of the best because of him. He is dearly missed by myself and my family. Again, our deepest sympathies to his family and all who knew him. Cam, may you rest in peace.

From: Darry-Anne Kenney
Relation: a good friend to myself and my deceased brother Dean Wells

You were called ‘Sir’ by my brother Dean Wells and myself, as we would meet for coffee at your restaurant and figure out the world each day. You will be missed my friend. Your presence in everything you did, has touched the hearts of everyone you knew. Godspeed Cam. ’38’
