Obituary

Cyril Fitchett of Castlegar B.C passed away on May 20, 2010 with family at his side.

“Cy” was predeceased by wife Edna, and brothers Bert Fitchett and Walter Fitchett. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his children David (Jackie) Fitchett, Gordon (Pat) Fitchett and Lesley Kohorst, seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and his companion Connie Morris-Rowley.

Cy was born in Mortlach Saskatchewan to Joseph and Grace Fitchett. The family moved to Harrop in the 1920’s where they owned an orchard. Cy enlisted in the Canadian Air Forces during World War II and was stationed in England where he served as an aircraft mechanic. He married Edna Swalwell of Darlington, England in 1944 and when the war ended, he brought his new family out to Canada to settle first in Nelson and then in Procter B.C.

Cy was involved in the local community and in particular the Procter Community Hall Society. He enjoyed playing the drums for the Fitchett family band at numerous dances and functions throughout the West Kootenays during the 1950’s. More recently, he spent many hours working at his hobby of collecting and repairing antique clocks and at various woodworking projects.

Cy was employed as a deckhand on the maiden voyage of the MV Anscomb in 1947 which began his lifetime career on the Kootenay Lake ferries. He held positions as an oiler, mate, Captain and eventually Senior Captain. Cy and Edna retired to Balfour in 1982 and later moved to Castlegar.

A celebration of Cy’s life will be held on Saturday, May 29th, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Nelson United Church, 602 Silica Street with Rev. David Boyd as celebrant.

Cremation has taken place at the Nelson Crematorium.

As an expression of sympathy, family & friends may make donations to Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation, 3 View Street, Nelson B.C, V1L 2V1.
