Dale Burgess

January 14, 1945 - January 28, 2017

In Loving Memory of

Dale Burgess – A longtime resident of Ymir and Salmo.

Dale was born in Windsor, Nova Scotia, January 14, 1945. At the age of 19 he made the long trip across the Providences to Ymir. Dale was a hardworking man and held different jobs including logging, mining, road building, and retired from ATCO Lumber. His passion was running equipment and if it had tracks or tires he could run it.  He was a “dang good” operator. Dale received the Bravery Award in Canada and recognized as a Carnegie hero from the States as part of the “12 Brave Men” for a mine rescue. He also was commended for “swimming” the Salmo River to help save a raft full of kids.  He was proud of his communities. If help was needed Dale whole heartedly was there and gave his all to help.  He poured countless hours into community benefit work to include volunteer fire fighter for many years.  He loved his Nova Scotia roots too and made many trips back home to visit.  He adored his “sing songs”. If there was a chance to sing or dance he was right there in the mist of it all. He’d sing and dance all night.  Dale loved to travel and camp and traveled throughout the States and Canada whenever he got the chance, even if it was just a drive out to see his son at the property that he loved, have coffee, and shoot the breeze in the shop with his son and the “boys”.

Dale passed on Saturday, January 28, 2017 in a car accident right outside Salmo. Dale is survived by his best friend Kay, his son James, his grandson Liam, brothers and sisters (Garwin, Wayne, Blain, Sandy, and Donna) and many nephews, nieces, and friends.

Dale loved life to the fullest and touched many lives in his 72 years here and will be missed greatly by everyone that knew him.

Dales Celebration of Life will be Saturday, May 27, 2017, 11am-2pm, at the Salmo Legion Hall.
