David Michael Amaral

September 29, 1949 - May 3, 2021

David Michael Amaral

Sept. 29, 1949 – May. 3, 2021

David passed away peacefully at Jubilee Manor holding hands with his beloved wife & life long partner Liz Amaral following a long journey with Fronto-temporal Dementia and Cancer.

Family came first for David and Liz.  They were a powerful parenting duo creating a safe and vibrant space for their children to thrive.  Papa to his kids and grandkids, David was always ready to play and teach.  He made a game out of building rock walls and fences on the farm. Though he wasn’t as convincing with other chores! He loved to laugh and would share many a groaner, the precursor to today’s Dad jokes.  Papa will be remembered for his bear hugs and kind, encouraging words.  He gave us our roots and our wings.

David has been an active member of the Nelson community for 49+ years.  He was involved in the community co-op, environmental committees, church work and social justice. David was an avid cyclist.  He rode his bike to work, even in the winter, before bike commuting was cool. He will be remembered fondly by those he nursed and worked alongside at KLH.  He shared his love of music as a drummer with Second Wind and the house band for Mountain Lakes Assisted Living.  He enjoyed many forms of art – painting, drawing and had carved a jade heart for each member of his family.

David is survived by his wife of 50 years, Liz , their 3 children Marcia (Kurt Gervais), Naomi (Cory Crowe), and Joe (Jayme Amaral) and 4 grandchildren; Hayley, Brenna, Penelope & Sophia and his brother Anthony and nieces and nephews.  He was predeceased by parents Manuel and Dorothy and his brothers Dennis, Michael and Craig.

In keeping with the current COVID-19 situation, a small family funeral has been held. Thank-you to the outstanding Nurses and Caregivers at Jubilee Manor and Mountain Lakes for the grace and compassion they showed our much loved Papa in his stay with them.  We have a deep appreciation for Dr. Kirsten & Dr. Janz for their excellent medical care and attention.

The family also thanks David’s many friends for their messages and notes of support.  In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to KLH.

Be still and know that I am God.

From: Darlene Playdon
Relation: Acquaintance from visits to my mother at Mountain Lakes.

So sorry to hear of David’s passing, he was such a gentleman and was so very kind to my mother Helen when she was living at Mountain Lakes. She always loved the Second Wind group and the lovely music they shared in the lounge there.

From: Jessie Renzie
Relation: Worked together.

I nursed for many years with David at KLH and he was one of the kindest nurses I ever had the privilege of working with. I’m thinking of David and wishing his family hope in the midst of sorrow and comfort in the midst of pain. Please accept my condolences. Jessie Renzie.

David was such a kind and caring man. I feel lucky that he came into our lives, meeting my Dad in hospital before both were moved up to Mountain Lakes. David was a good friend to my Dad, playing croquinole with him, visiting regularly. He bore his pain and grief so bravely. I will really miss him.

My condolences to David’s family. I do remember David from Mountain Lakes. But my most vivid memory of David is from Kootenay Lake Hospital. The night my Mom passed away in 2002. He was on shift that night. I remember his caring and compassionate nature. May his family be comforted by their memories. Also the wonderful impact he made on so many others lives.

Condolences to the family, I met David many years ago when I was a patient and he was nursing at KLH. A very fine fellow.
