From: Sherry Nicholson
Relation: Friend

Doris was without measure. She was kind and thoughtful and a bright light in my life. I always looked forward to seeing her and talking to her. She will be missed. She was a living example of advocacy for human rights. It was a great pleasure to say I knew her.

Doris was a very special lady and will be sadly missed. It was always a pleasure to see her and her big smile.

From: Hoda Ghamrawy
Relation: Honoured to call myself a friend

Well, She was with gumption and no nonsense approach to life. She had a terrific sense of humour and a sense of the absurd. We shared Thanksgiving Dinner a few times and I left feeling I dined in the company of a very intelligent and very aware woman. She welcomed me to Nelson and how I loved seeing her walk around and with a delightful smile greet me in passing. I will miss her a great deal. There is a sadness that we all shared at the Kootenay Co-op AGM tonight where it was announced that she had crossed and this was the first meeting without her. Her absence was felt. So travel well Doris. Thank you for your beauty and for your LIGHT and what an honour it is that our paths did cross and what an inspiration you are to me and so May You Journey Well and may your story and joy of life linger to remind us all of your strength, your determination, your wisdom and your capacity to be straight forward. You had Universal Compassion to the human story so we reached across our faiths and knew that we are connected. Happy Thanksgiving when it is time to have my meal this year I will raise a glass to you and celebrate you…Thank you for letting us know your Mother has crossed and as the Budhists say,” Happy Continuation Day Dear Doris…”

From: Velvet
Relation: customer

Doris was a customer in the early days of my business, around 1999-2003. I always enjoyed bringing her produce order. Doris impressed me so much- living on her own in the forest, hauling wood, and walking that driveway on the little path in the winter… and in her 80’s- wow! She always had a smile and I loved to stop and chat with her. Doris was an inspiration- I hope I have her energy, strength, and independence as I get older.

From: Frances and Ron Welwood
Relation: friend and librarian

Doris, as expressed by those condolence messages above, was a delight! She had a smile and a witty or whimsical comment for everyone. We admire her knowledge, interest and involvement in every aspect of Kootenay life, from saving libraries to environmental and artistic issues. Attending what to the rest of us was ‘just another meeting’ was not an obstacle for Doris.

From: Sara Raphals
Relation: Close friends in high school

Doris and I were very close friends in high school, and stayed in touch across the continent for the many decades that followed.
