Dorothy Mae Tupper (Thompson)

October 5, 1931 - August 6, 2021

Dorothy Mae Tupper (Thompson) October 5, 1931 – August 6, 2021 Dorothy embraced a life full of family, education, and adventure. She was born in Victoria, and moved to Vancouver, attending Point Grey Junior High and Magee Senior High Schools. She studied Chemistry at the University of British Columbia, but left to raise her four children, Elaine, Brent, Lisa, and Philip. Dorothy then enrolled at the British Columbia Institute of Technology, where she earned the Governor General’s Award in her field of Chemical and Metallurgic Technology. Most of her professional life was spent at the Department of Fisheries and Oceans as a water quality analyst and expert witness at corporate trials in British Columbia and the Territories. As a result, Dorothy became an environmentalist, joining and supporting the Sierra Club and the Green Party. She loved to hike with the Naturalists, swim, and read. After retiring, she travelled with Elderhostel, trekked the Annapurna Circuit, climbed the Great Wall, and taught English in Thailand. During her retirement in Victoria, she was a volunteer driver and helped as a docent at St. Ann’s Academy during musical performances. Dorothy was a strong role model, and her children, grandchildren, great and great-great grandchildren will miss her intelligent and progressive spirit.

From: Barbara (Monroe) Macaulay
Relation: Former neighbour

My eyes were stinging when I read the tribute to Mrs. Tupper. When her children were young, they lived up the lane from me. I remember thinking that she looked like Snow White and that she was welcoming and kind. She took time to watch over neighbourhood children, swimming in the pool, gave wonderful birthday parties, and served homemade root beer. I loved looking at the photos in the hallway, including one of Mrs. Tupper as -May Queen? The last time we saw one another was a few years after they’d moved to Kerrisdale. I have lived in Victoria for almost 40 years, and so wish I had known that this amazing woman lived here. To Elaine, Brent, Lisa and Philip, I am so sorry to learn about your mother’s passing, but so glad to have an opportunity to learn more about her, and to let you know that I have often thought of your family.

From: Yvonne Oakley

Dear Elaine, Brent, Lisa, Phil and Families,

We were so very sorry to hear of the passing of your Mom, (Grandmother, Great-Grandmother,
Great-Great-Grandmother) – we know she will be sorely missed by all of you but are sure that she has
left you with many wonderful, warm and inspiring memories which will be with you always.

Our own memories are those of family times when you four were young – giggly and in constant
motion – splashing in pools or keen to get at the Christmas tree! Dorothy’s loving and adept parenting
during your growing years steered you to become the mature, responsible and caring adults (and parents)
you are now and reflects her inner strengths and sense of self and purpose. Her ability to balance a life
filled with family, studies, work, travel and community service inspires us all. We know that you will each
have your own special memories to cherish and she will be in our thoughts always.

Love to you all, The Oakleys, Evan, Yvonne, Mark, Scott and Michelle.

Relation: Graduated together from BCIT and worked at the same time with Department of Fisheries and Oceans in the '70s.

Its been many years since I have seen Dorothy, but remembered the many times we encountered one another at the original Fisheries Analytical lab in West Vancouver. Dorothy and I graduated from BCIT at the same time and shortly thereafter join Fisheries. I always remember Dorothy as a dedicated, helpful and cheerful individual. My condolences to her family and all her knew her. A great individual.

Relation: Neighbour and friend

Your family were our neighbours on Gambier Island where Dorothy became friends with our Mum, a lasting friendship that continued until our mother’s death in 2005. I kept in contact and visited with Dorothy for some years, but then lost touch. She was very intelligent, interesting company and always active, in more ways than I knew. I am sorry to hear she has passed away. My condolences to all your family.

From: John Davidson
Relation: Coworker and Business Partner.

Dorothy was a coworker at Fisheries and Oceans and later became a partner in Quanta Trace Laboratories. We started QTL in the early 80’s, just as the economy tanked. Our early directors meetings were somewhat stressed in those days but Dorothy always brought a bottle of wine so at the end of the meetings, everything looked much better. Dorothy was great to work with and was a skilled professional analyst. I was very sorry to hear of her passing.
