Obituary

Dorothy Colman Wassick

August 01, 1925-June 13,2020

It is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Dorothy Colman Wassick on June 13, 2020 at the age of 94, the last matriarch of the Colman family. She was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba where she and her four siblings, Ernie-Sybil-Joyce-Dennis were raised. The family moved to Vancouver before settling in Nelson. Dorothy became an exceptional gymnast and also received a business degree at L.V. Rogers high school. There she met her future in Harry (Red) Wassick. Together they raised 5 children, Harriet-Dave-Guy-Juliet-Brant, and loved life on the north shore at 9 mile. Mom kept a great garden full of fresh vegetables and also canned fruit which we would enjoy every night for dessert. Mom would always have snacks ready when we kids came home on the bus and take us down to the beach to play in our paradise. Mom was devoted to the family and made countless sacrifices to keep us happy, healthy and loved. One loving memory we all have is when she got a phone call that her Mom passed away on a Christmas morning but Mom didn’t tell us until Boxing Day so that we got the full joy of a family Christmas. On her 80th birthday celebration we held a huge family party, the word to describe her to express our love was ‘selflessness’, she always put us first, it’s who she was. Mom was an avid sports fan and rarely missed a Blue Jays or Canucks game.

Mom is joining Dad(2016) and son Dave(2014) and grandson Jason Blake Savage(1982) in heaven and is survived by daughters Harriet (Bowolin) and Juliet (Genero) and sons Guy and Brant, along with 10 loving grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

The family is so thankful to the wonderful caring staff at Jubilee Manor who made Mom’s final years full of joy and deeply felt connections.

In lieu of flowers, you may consider making a donation in her memory to the NELSON JUBILEE MANOR/PLACE FOUNDATION.

So sad to hear of Dot’s passing, and so fortunate to have known Dot since the 1960’s. Son Guy and I have been the best of friends since high school. When visiting Guy, I remember the yummy meals that Dot prepared and the fun of sharing a family dinner complete with lively conversation. I remember how warm, loving and gracious Dorothy was. Dot and Red raised a wonderful family and made a huge contribution to the Nelson and North Shore community. I will treasure fondly the memories of Dot and the good old days when life was simpler and the seeds of lasting friendships blossomed. Dorothy was indeed blessed to have such a good and long life. Condolences to all the family. Big Hugs, Ken

My favourite Aunt, despite having a large family herself , she and uncle Bill always welcomed our family with open arms. Wonderful memories of snuggly warm feather ticks on sleep overs, live music in the sitting room, powdered milk, warm buttered buns, outdoor games, and amazing fish fry’s and picnics at the lake, to name a few. I think I learned to water ski at Uncle Bills and Auntie Dots too…… They both will be forever in my heart ❤️. My deepest sympathy and condolences to my cousins, their families and friends….. Rest In Peace Auntie Dot !

Auntie Dorothy was a very special to me, you know that kind of special person who doesn’t realize how special they are…. just went on being sweet, welcoming, open hearted, thoughtful and making others happy as if it were the most ordinary thing in the world….a genuine loving sweetheart she was. And who isn’t going to miss that splendid aroma of her cooking/baking as you walk in the front door! Thank you for being you Auntie Dorothy. Forever in my heart. Love and hugs to all my cousins.
