Douglas Brian Marquardt

April 10, 1957 - October 21, 2013

Tribute

With great sadness we announce the passing of our son Douglas Brian Marquardt on October 21st, 2013 at Mountain Lake Seniors Community, Nelson, BC, after a lengthy battle with multiple sclerosis. He was predeceased by his only sister Peggy in 2011 and is survived by his loving parents Philip and Lily of Nelson, BC and his siblings, Richard of Fort Saint James, BC, Randy of Mesa, Arizona, David of Maple Ridge, BC, Darrell of Calgary, Alberta, and Neil of Pitt Meadows, BC.

Douglas loved sports. He golfed, accomplishing a Hole-In-One as a teenager. He loved to ski but his greatest ambition was to play hockey. At age 16 he accompanied Ernie Gare to Mill Bay near Victoria, BC to a hockey school. Here he met Darrell Sittler and Pete Mahovalich. IN 1974 he tried out with the Medicine Hat Tigers, subsequently, their farm club the Vernon Vikings, returning home to complete High School. After graduation in 1975 he went to work at the plywood plant in Nelson for a year. IN 1976 he and a friend left to tour Europe. That November he remained in Salzburg, Austria as a player coach of the Junior Hockey Team. Retuning to Canada he spent a year in Regina where he worked for his brother Randy. Back in Nelson he went to work with CP Rail as a Car Control Clerk from 1979-90.  He became an entrepreneur form 1990-98 in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland. Here he was diagnosed with MS. Returning to Nelson he was able to work at the Golf Club as Course Marshall for the next two summers. In 2005, he went on a disability pension, lived at the Kiwanis Villa and got around well in a wheel chair. He put up a valiant struggle against this insidious disease. He remained an athlete at heart and never missed a televised sporting event. He was also computer literate.

In the sprint of 2008 Doug was moved to the Assisted Living Section of Mountain Lakes Senior Community in Nelson as he was no longer ambulatory. It is a beautiful facility built in 2007. He was very content with his care there.

We would like to thank all of the people at Mountain Lakes who gave our son Douglas such compassion and care throughout his last five years.

Bye Doug,
You were a good friend. I wish we’d played golf together.

The Marquardt family was a big part of my childhood and I have so many amazing memories spent with Doug or as everyone affectionately called him “Phil” I remember his Trans Am cruising Baker Street like it was yesterday. He had a genuinely gentle and free spirit.
My sincere condolences to the entire Marquardt family.

Doug and I attended high school in Nelson together. He was an energetic, fun loving guy who was always smiling and promoting laughter. I have the fondest memories of him. Sincerest condolences to Doug’s family.

I have many memories of the times “Phil” and I shared together since we met each other way back in 1979. I was the Valley Boy. He was the Nelson Boy. We skied, played golf, crib, ‘chased girls’ and learned to grow up. It was in 2003, in Nelson, after many years apart that we reacquainted. Doug’s life had been effected by MS and he taught me that no matter how difficult my day was… there is always a reason to stay positive and look forward. My heart goes out to all of you, his family and support for so many years. RIP Doug. See you on the other side when I get there.

We have known “Phil” for many years. Loved his sense of humor, and positive attitude. We enjoyed Phil, and loved having him at our many parties over the years. We will miss him. Heart felt condolences to The Marquardt family. Rest in peace, Doug.

The Marquardt Family,
On behalf of my family, I was very sorry to read about Doug’s passing. Doug was one of the nicest guys in our 1975 LVR Grad class and I also knew him quite well from hanging out at the Civic Centre rink, before and after hockey and figure skating ice-time. Naturally we talked mostly about hockey! Great memories from long ago. He will be missed in Nelson by many friends. God Bless

Mr & Mrs Marquardt. My deepest sympathy to you and family. Doug was one of my first close friend upon moving to Nelson in 1973. To share a memory of Doug would be difficult as ther are so many, but I will forever remember when he bought an old Austin car and the times driving around Nelson in the cold winter trying to keep the windows defrosted. He was truly a great friend and someone I could always depend on. Sorry that I didn’t hear About Doug’s passing till recently or I would have come home to Nelson to pay my respects. I look forward to seeing him once again in the hereafter. Thanks Doug (Phil as we called him) for being a true friend and great guy.
