Douglas Earl Waneck

November 19, 1946 - August 15, 2014

Born in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan Nov. 19, 1946, Doug graduated from high school in Vernon, became a journeyman carpenter and settled in the Slocan area.  His Kootenay home gave him the perfect environment for his many passions including diving, fishing, hiking, art and wood sculpture and motorcycle touring.   Doug's insightful, direct yet whimsical humour lit up the room.  He is survived by his daughter Jessica Hamel, grandson Brayden of Kelowna, stepsons Scott, Cordell & grandson Coby, brother Glen and family in Armstrong and best friend Leslie Yerex.

My condolences on the loss of Doug. I will always remember with fondness, the times we spent , whether hiking, working or just hanging out.

My heart goes out to to Jessie, Chris, and Leslie, now. Doug was a huge influence on my life especially in my late teens and early twenties when he was a mentor to me. He taught me many things that I still appreciate every day. He taught me how to use a chainsaw, select the best firewood, how to build and fend for myself in the country. He led me up mountains and into alpine meadows, and I’m not alone. He was a good friend to many of us who he welcomed into his life. Thanks Doug.
