Dr. Patrick Johnston

July 25, 1933 - October 6, 2014

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dearly beloved husband, Dr. Patrick Johnston on Monday, October 6th, 2014 at the age of 81.

Pat spent the last few months of his life at Nelson Jubilee Manor where he passed away peacefully in his sleep after many years of significant health problems.

Pat was an intelligent, insightful and caring person who used his talents to help others. His love of life and gift for humor brought much joy into the lives of those around him.

There will be no funeral by request.

After cremation, his ashes will be taken to New Zealand where a memorial service will be held in Wellington to honor a much loved husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle and great uncle.

From: Vic Neufeld

Pat was a great example to me. He hired me to be his assistant many years ago and he taught me a lot. He was a sensitive, talented man, and I am thankful to him for the time I spent with him.

From: Bob Caron
Relation: Colleague

I was saddened to hear of Pat’s passing this past week. We first met in 1980 when our paths crossed…he as school psychologist and I as counsellor at Nelson Community Services Centre. He was an essential consultant and mentor for me at that time. Over the years I cherished the times we ran into each other, as I knew he would make me think as well as laugh. Thank you Pat ..you Mad-Hatter ! My condolences to all family and friends.

From: Evelyn Voykin
Relation: co-worker

I have just learned of Pat’s passing, though I knew he was at Jubilee. In the 1970s/80s I worked in the Nelson School Board office on Anderson St. where Pat worked. I send my condolences to his family, but will and still do recall what a fun, smart, truly great man he was.

From: Marilyn Miller
Relation: colleague

I worked with Pat for several years in Special Services. He was a mentor to me and I often remember, and even quote, quote his aphorisms, such as his
” It is better to cultivate a small well-tended garden than to have a large untended one”
I always appreciated Pat’s wit, intelligence and deep understanding of humanity, with all our foibles.

From: Jane Leeming
Relation: We worked together at SD8

I was very sorry to hear about Pat. He was one of the funniest people I have ever known. He was brilliant and scattered and a wonderful man. He will be missed.

From: Christina Hollins
Relation: Relationship - How did you know the deceased?

My Uncle Pat will be missed by many of his near and dear here in New Zealand. I will miss his intelligence, sharp wit, generous spirit and zest for life. He was one of the funniest people I know and always told the most entertaining stories. I will always value the time I had with him and will especially remember staying with him and Mairel in Canada many years ago. My life has been all the more enriched with having Pat part of it. Thank you to Mairel for devoting so much love, time and care to our uncle. Uncle Pat was loved and cherished by his family. R.I.P. Uncle Pat.
