Edna Elizabeth Whiteley (Steed)

April 3, 1921 - May 24, 2021

Edna Whiteley

On the evening of May 24th, 2021 Edna Elizabeth Whiteley (nee Steed) passed away peacefully in her sleep at the age of 100. She will be greatly missed by her many friends, family, and the community of Nelson. Edna is predeceased by her loving husband of 57 years, Fred Whiteley, as well as son Peter. She is survived by her children Susan (John), Ken, (Lorna), Keith (Terry), five grandchildren Dana, Jennifer, Vanessa, Geoff and Mark, six great grandchildren, nephews, nieces and her sister in law and close friend, Shirley.

Edna lived her entire life in Nelson and was involved in various aspects of Nelson life. Edna was an avid skier, skiing into her 90’s, an active member of the Nelson United Church, and a supporter of the Capitol Theatre. Edna was perhaps best known as Nelson’s Welcome Wagon representative, welcoming newcomers for over 40 years. Edna was full of energy, she lived her life to the fullest, had a positive outlook and touched many lives with her inspirational spirit and hospitality. Life was brighter because of her.

We would like to thank the staff of Mountain Lake who loved and cared for Edna, while keeping her safe during the pandemic. We would also like to extend our deepest gratitude to Wendy and Bob Steed; the love and support you’ve given her over the years is beyond words.

Due to Covid restrictions, a service for Edna will be determined at a later date.

From: Craig Jones
Relation: One of my mother's best friends from their shared childhood.

I’ve known Auntie Edna all my life because she and my mother – Catherine McLeod – were the best of childhood friends. I grew up with her two sons, Ken & Keith, and we were in and out of each other’s lives all our lives until I left the Kootenay Valley in the mid-1970s. We summered together on the North Shore and Proctor and passed many happy hours just hanging out, swimming, water-skiing, etc. Edna was among the best friends my mother ever had and one could not ask for a better “Auntie” of no blood relation. She was a marvel and Nelson is the better for having her for all those years. It was a pleasure knowing you, Edna, and thanks for being the marvellous person you were and for being such a good and loving friend to my mother. One hundred years! We should all be so lucky to enjoy such great ride and exert such a positive and affirming influence on so many people’s lives.

From: Mary Louise Horton

Thinking of you Susan, Ken, Keith, your children and grandchildren as you commemorate the passing of Edna. She was an extraordinary person, welcoming and accepting of all others. I felt privileged to be considered part of the family and have many fond memories of our shared times as Welcome Wagon Hostesses and of sharing the joys of ringing the handbells at what was then St Paul’s Trinity United Church. Edna did, indeed make life a little brighter for all who knew her. She leaves a legacy of love. Sincerely, Mary L Horton

I have fond memories of Edna welcoming me to the Nelson community as a young mom. Edna was such a treasure for Nelson. My condolences to the family.

From: Linda Taylor
Relation: Friend frrom many years ago.

I first met Edna in the early 60’s when we were fellow skiers at the Silver King Ski Hill.
Many hours were spent in the old warming ( and drying) hut where friendships developed.. In the past number of years, Edna was a great audience member and supporter of our Second Wind Musical Group which performed at the Senior Homes.
I always enjoyed her visits after a performance . She had such kind words and
enthusiastic praise for our being there.
I know we will all miss her friendly face and happy smile when things get started again.
Thank you, Edna for being so special,

From: Lynda Iwanik
Relation: Friend.

I was very touched and surprised by Edna arriving at my Hospital bedside with a basket of gifts for our newborn baby from Welcome Wagon long ago. She will be greatly missed. Thanks Edna for your years of community service. Edna was a wonderful person. Rest in Peace.

Cinnamon Buns coming out of the oven. Hockey in the basement with Peter, Ken and my brother Bob. Skiing with the Whiteley’s. Working on the new Silver King Lodge when I was 6 years old. Christmas Day dinners at the Whiteley’s. Fred carving the turkey with his new electric knife. Fred fixing a boat engine gas line with chewing gum as we drifted down the arm. Whiteley’s summer camp near the Steed’s.
Edna at 89 riding the bus from Nelson to Victoria in February to attend my Mom Audrey’s service whom she had been friends with since they were 16. Visiting Edna with my Dad in 2011 and checking out all of the old haunts including our camp at Queens Bay. I feel so fortunate to have grown up around people like Edna.
