Tribute
Elma(Ahafia)Verigin passed away peacefully at the Westview Continuing Care Centre in Stony Plain, Alberta on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at the age of 85 years. She was born in Verigin, Saskatchewan on November 20th, 1925. She was raised on the farm by her parents Nick and Mable Shukin. As a young woman she moved to Princeton and worked in a bakery before moving to Nelson, where she worked at the MacDonald’s Jam Factory. It was in Nelson that she met Kay K. Verigin, and on June 3rd, 1945 they were married. Their honeymoon was in Crawford Bay where Kay worked in the logging industry. Shortly after Elma and Kay moved to Richards street in Nelson, BC. Their first child Laurence Kenneth was born on June 19, 1946. Their family grew on December 2, 1950 when their daughter Sharon Kay was born. Elma loved her role as a mother, homemaker and gracious hostess. In 1955, Elma and Kay moved with their young family to 723 Innes street. Elma’s mother Mable Shukin came to live with them at this time. She enjoyed her hobbies of crochet, sewing, knitting, embroidery, and bingo night with the ladies. In 1998 Elma lost her husband of 53 years. Not long after, Elma herself developed serious health issues and moved to Stony Plain to live with Sharon and Wayne. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and the time spent in the garden. She lived with them until entering Continuing Care in the middle of May, 2011. She leaves to mourn her loss; her son Laurence, her daughter Sharon (Wayne), 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren. Elma is predeceased by her father Nick (1952), her mother Mabel (1978), William (1989), Alex (1989), and Pete (2003). The family would like to say a very big thank you to all who have supported and helped us. It has helped us to get through this time of loss.
A Life Well Lived
A life well lived is a precious gift
Of hope and strength and grace
From someone who has made our world
A brighter better place.
It’s filled with moments sweet and sad
With smiles and sometimes tears
With friendships formed
And good times shared
And laughter through the years
A life well lived is a legacy
Of pride and pleasure
A loving lasting memory
Our grateful hearts will treasure.
Mom and Grandma
You will be sadly missed
But always carried in our hearts
The love you gave so freely.
