Elsie Makasoff (Verigin)

September 27, 1937 - September 12, 2021

Tribute

It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Elsie Makasoff. Elsie left this Earth on September 12, 2021 with her family at her side.  She was predeceased by her husband (John) in 2008 after more than 50 years of marriage.

Elsie was born in Glade September 27, 1937, and spent her early years in that community.  Elsie’s parents, Louis and Tina Verigin, and siblings Mike, Helen and Tina have previously passed away.  She is fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, and cousins. Her dear friend Helen is waiting for her to arrive in Heaven.

Elsie and John settled in Taghum and raised four loving children.  She was very proud of her children and their families.  Her family continues to grow and includes Lollie (Grant) Furness in Penticton, Mike (Linda) Makasoff in Sault Ste. Marie, Janice (Dwaine) Couch in Vernon, and Marilyn (John) Van Zanden in Nelson; grandchildren: Mitchell, Tyler, Lindsey, Chelan, Kelly, Breeanne, Andrew and Jordan; and great grandchildren: Carter, Cohen, Mariah and Calder.

Elsie was the cornerstone of her family, and was affectionately known as Baba.  A role she loved and cherished.  Nothing made her happier than having a house full of family with her in the kitchen ensuring everyone was well fed and looked after.

Her passion was to sing in the local Doukhobor choir. She loved to bake, cook, garden and make preserves.

Elsie enjoyed her retirement years, spending time with friends at Broader Horizons, and making   new friends at Lake View Village.

A family service was held September 18 in Nelson, followed by an interment ceremony at Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery.

As an expression of sympathy, family and friends may make a donation to a charity of their choosing.

Her family would like to thank Elsie’s friends and family for all their love, help and support; and her doctors, medical staff and support aides from Lake View Village and Jubilee Manor for their care and attention.

Her family would also like to thank Frances, Mike, Leonard and Janice for being there for her, and helping her family with their support over the years.

Nancy and I are thinking of you Mike. Sounds like you had a beautiful Mom.

From: Marlene Derhousoff

I was saddened to hear of your dear Mom’s passing. “The ones we love are never gone, they live within our hearts”. May she rest in peace.

Relation: Friend

Sending condolences, the world lost an amazing, compassionate and witty woman. I will miss her sense of humour and twinkle in her eye when she talked about family. Elsie gave me my first canning lesson (peaches), and recently her salsa recipe. I will treasure the special times I spent with her, from walks at Lakeview Village, to the laughs we shared over the silly things that happened day to day. One of my fondest memories is when she introduced me as her friend, rather than Marilyn’s friend. RIP Elsie, my friend
