Fred Martin

July 29, 1934 - April 19, 2022

Tribute

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Fred Martin, age 87, on April 19, 2022.

Fred was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 29, 1934 to Jakob & Sabine Martin the youngest of six children.  At age 15, Fred began his pressman apprenticeship in commercial printing.

At age 17 Fred met Ruth, he said to some of his friends, I am going to marry that girl.  It was love at first sight. They were married Sept. 4, 1954.  Ruth was truly the love of his life and they enjoyed 67 years of marriage together.  While they lived in Winnipeg, their three children were born, Ron, Linda & Janice. In 1967 Fred & family moved to Nelson where Fred worked at the Nelson Daily News in the commercial printing department, retiring as the manager of the department in 1992.

Fred & Ruth spent many wonderful retirement years travelling.  They visited many destinations; they loved their cruise vacations but most memorable are the RV camping vacations with their grandchildren.

Fred was a long-time member and involved in the establishment of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, now known as Ascension Lutheran Church.  In 1983 Fred became a member of Rotary.  Over the years, he made many good friends and was always eager to help with projects.

Fred loved to curl and was a member of the senior men’s curling club.  Golfing was a passion as well; he spent many days on the golf course with his friends.  Fred loved to sing and was a member of the Second Wind Group.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth, son Ron (Eve) Martin, daughters Linda (Norm) Wesley and Janice (John) Matosevic; grandchildren Karen, Dan, Kyle, Melanie, Jennifer, and Joshua; great grandchildren Ava, Anna, Nathan, Hayden, Kara, and Ella.  He was so loved and will be forever missed.

The family would like to extend their thanks to Dr. Kelly Mieske for the many years of care, to the first responders and to Thompson Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation in Fred’s name to the BC Lung Association.

There will be a memorial service at Ascension Lutheran Church, date to be announced.
