Gary Wice
Nov 5 1964- April 9 2019
On Tuesday April 9th 2019 Gary Wice passed away peacefully at the age of 54 years. He is predeceased by his parents Ronald and Margaret Wice. He was survived by his brothers Kevin Wice of Vancouver, BC and Ron Wice of Mission, BC.Gary was born November 5th, 1964 in Toronto (East York), Ontario. Moving to the west coast in 1967, he grew up in Maple Ridge. He completed a diploma in Recreational Therapy at Vancouver Community College and subsequently worked with inmates, AIDS patients, and seniors in various facilities and institutions. Gary also ran an event planning company sharing with many his flair of exquisite style and decoration.
In 2008, Gary left Vancouver for Cranbrook to become a Licensed Practical Nurse, studying at the College of the Rocky Mountains. There he meet his good friend, Joyce Stecyk (husband Tom). Upon graduation, he accepted a nursing position in Hay River, NWT and was there for approx. 8 years. There he made lifelong friends, with Barb Hart, Ruth Dubois and Mabel Jamison. While in Hay River, he also had Lincoln, his dog, who stole his heart and made him laugh.
In 2017 Gary was diagnosed with cancer and took radiation and chemo treatments in Edmonton. Sadly the cancer returned and in May 2017 he moved to Nelson, BC. where he finally passed away at the Kootenay Lake Hospital.
Gary loved to travel having visited many places. Gary’s notable traits were tenacity, courage, humour, love of ice cream and an incredibly great taste in décor. Sincerely caring for his patients, he loved being a nurse, in particular working in the hospital and with long-term care patients. He will be missed by many.
There was a Celebration of Life on May 19th, 2019, where Gary’s ashes were spread in accordance with his wishes. It was attended by family and close friends.
