Geoffrey John England

January 9, 1950 - August 24, 2011

Geoffrey John England passed away at his home in Nelson, BC at the age of 61. He leaves behind his mother Barbara England (nee Moody), sister Christine, his three sons James, Matthew and Ian and their mother, Marilyn (nee Race), his wife Sandra (nee Christou), and their three daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Barbara. He was predeceased by his father Arthur England.

Born in the English seaside resort of Cleethorpes on January 9th, 1950, Geoffrey was a lively lad who showed an early enthusiasm for reading, music and sport. With a strong sense of justice, good humour and affable character, Geoff went on to graduate with a Masters of Law from the London School of Economics in 1971, a Masters of Industrial Relations from Warwick University in 1972 and a Masters of Law from Dalhousie University in 1974.

Labour relations proved to be his calling and he dedicated his life’s work to furthering the cause of fairness in the workplace. After moving to Canada in 1973 he taught Labour Law at many schools including the Universities of Calgary, Lethbridge, Queens, and Saskatchewan. As an arbitrator, educator, and academic writer he made a significant contribution to the field of labour law in Canada.

Geoff was a dedicated family man. Always a great source of entertainment, his love of history enabled him to weave fantastic stories from his imagination. His six children also enjoyed the excitement of camping expeditions and shared his passions for sport, books, and a good beer. He enjoyed many eclectic interests, spending hours playing guitar, learning languages, reading history… but above all, he was a loving husband and father.

The funeral will take place on Thursday September 1st at the Thompson funeral home in Nelson, BC. It was Geoffrey’s wish that any donations be made to the Strathcona Society in support of soldiers and families of Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians) tank regiment.

Relation: father of my little friend Barbara

Dear Barbara, dear family,

I am so sorry to hear about your dad leaving you! I did not know he was sick.. Although I never met him, I have the feeling that I knew a bit about him through you Barbara. When you were living with us, you told us a lot about him and your family. For exemple remember the doggy pile? well, he taught you, you taught us and we still do it quite often.. I believe it came from your father isn’t it? so you see, he will always be with us… on a funny way which is usually how we want to remember people.
You are going to be lonely Barbara, but please remember that he will always be with you, On a very personnal note, I lost my dad 4 years ago, and have conversations with him. when I have questions, doubts, problems, he is always here with me…
It takes a year to heal, but we never forget, crying is good, smiling and laughing too.
Please send my love to your mother and sisters,

Relation: School friend

I was so sad to hear of Geoff’s death. He had enabled something very special to happen last year. By tracking down old school chums on the internet we were able to have a reunion of 20 of our junior school class 50 years after we left Reynolds St School. Cleethorpes. Geoff’s enthusiasm and suggestions were the motivating power which enabled this event to happen and it was a very special day for those of us who attended. I had not seen Geoff in those 50 years, but he had not changed, he still had a wonderful smile with a great twinkle in his eye. He was interested in all around him and a very interesting person. I am sure he will leave a huge gap in the lives of those who love him, but having known him will have been such a privilege.

Dear Sandra:
I am so sorry to hear that Geoff leaving you. I remember the last night before you both moved to Nelson, we spent hours at your beautiful backyard enjoying our friendship, Geoff’s Vietnamese and good laugh. Also, I could never forget the Christmas that I had pleasure to spend time with your family playing Picturnary. It seems happened just yesterday.
My thoughts and prayers will be with you, Elizabeth, Mary and Barbara. Miss you all !!! Tu-Nhi

From: Marilyn England
Relation: mother of Geoffrey's three sons

My thoughts are continually with you all at this sad time of Geoff’s untimely, premature death. We had our UK tribute to him here in Cleethorpes and raised a pint of his favourite mild beer in one of his preferred pubs. He will always be remembered for his quick wit and big personality.

Relation: Friend

I only met Geoff in the last decade and we never had a chance to become very close friends, but I always enjoyed the chance to chat with him about the law and life over dinner or a good beer when I was in Saskatoon. He cared very deeply about the things that mattered to him, especially his family; his passion and love of life will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, his friends and all those who are mourning his loss.

Relation: Student

Professor England was a wonderful teacher who made every class entertaining with his sense of humour. I am now an employment lawyer, and I credit him with cultivating my interest in the area. I know he will be missed by his students. My best wishes to his family.

Dear Sandra and family,

We were stunned and deeply saddened by the news of Geoff’s death. We can’t imagine how devastating this must be for all of you. We will always remember Geoff not only for his keen mind, but his good sense of humor. What wonderful hosts you both were–we enjoyed such good conversation along with the small feasts you served at your home in Lethbridge. Our daughter Sarah has now become a lawyer herself, and, while studying, often pointed out what an icon Geoff was in the field of labour law. It was certainly a privilege to be his student when he was teaching at U of L. How refreshing to be taught by someone with even a hint of leftist leanings when enrolled in management courses!

We send you our deepest sympathy and hold you in our thoughts and prayers,

Ricki and Marc Galeski
