Obituary

George Marcel Infeld

July 18, 1941 – May 9, 2019

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of George Infeld on May 9, 2019 after a long battle with progressive supranuclear palsy (closely resembled by ALS and Parkinson’s disease).

George was born in French Morrocco during World War 2, on July 18, 1941.  He is the eldest son of Serge Infeld & Fern Infeld (nee Levy).  Brother Gerry (Colleen Infeld) and sister Chantal (Georg Flaccavento).

George’s family immigrated to Toronto via Paris, France in 1957.  Once in Toronto George completed high school and was the first Infeld to find work to help support his family.   Completed his Bachelor of Arts Degree in History from the University of Toronto, then completed a teaching degree in 1964.

He traveled the world visiting nearly all of Canada, Europe, Israel and South America.  Upon returning he started his career in the banking sector while still living in Toronto.  In 1973, George moved to Vancouver with this long-time friend Ray Balban and his wife Mary.  Shortly afterwards he was hired at TD Bank and continued to take addition courses in accounting and computers.

In 1974 he met his wife of 43 years Ina Infeld (nee Shaw).  While living in Vancouver they started their family having two sons Edgar and Richard.  Wanting to raise their family away from the city life George, Ina and the boys spent the summer of 1981 travelling BC to find their new home.  After settling in Smithers, BC George began working for BC Forest services as an accountant.  While working full time, raising their family he and Ina also had a hobby farm.  When time for them to grow their family daughter Kristal came next, followed by another son Charles.

In 1992, the family packed up and moved to Nelson, BC and they still call Nelson home.  After settling in Nelson, George made many friends while working at the 4 mile office of the BC Forest Services.  He was active member of the Nelson Electric Tramway Society where he drove the trolley car for 23 years.  He also enjoyed being part of the Nelson bowling league for many years.

George was predeceased by both of his parents Serge and Fern Infeld, and his son Charles “Charlie” Infeld.  He is survived by his wife Ina Infeld, children Edgar “Ed” Infeld, Richard Infeld (Jessie), Kristal Infeld (Chad), granddaughter Evangelina, along with both his siblings Gerry Infeld (Colleen) and Chantal Flaccavento (George & Family), and many cousins in France & Switzerland.

The family would like to thank Dr Janz and the caring staff at Mountain Lakes Seniors Home, Nelson & District Hospice Society, Parkinson’s Society BC as well as the ALS Society of BC for all the support they gave both us and George through this long struggle.

At Georges request there will be no formal service but the family is planning for his interment at Nelson Memorial Park this summer.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to either;
