Gerald Edward Marion

January 19, 1921 - July 30, 2010

Gerald Edward Marion passed away peacefully on Friday, July 30th, 2010 after a long and well-lived life with his beloved wife, Anne, by his side. He left this earth as he had lived his life with grace and dignity. Gerald was the deeply-loved father of Catherine, Marcia, John (Annarita), Patricia (Paul) Hanki, Arthur (Dayle), and Yvonne (Michael) Lorusso. Grandfather of Margaret-Anne, Melissa, Andrea and Brendan; Nathan and Jess; Justin, Dominique and Jonathan; Marianne, Danielle, Mark, John, and Katharyn; Kristan, Kelly and Joel; and Nicole, Ryanne and Michelle. Great-grandfather of Andrew; David, Isabelle, Andrew, Cash, Lila and Leo; and Whitney.
Gerald was born in Lethbridge, Alberta on January 19th, 1921. In his youth, Gerald was an all-star baseball player in the Alberta Senior AAA league. During World War II, Gerald served overseas as an air-gunner in the RCAF, based in Britain. He was shot down over Germany and was held for several months as a POW. After the war, Gerald realized his dream of living in the mountains. Gerald and Anne built their home on Nelson’s north shore where they raised their family. Always a hard worker, Gerald spent many years employed with CPR’s transport. When the terminal closed, Gerald moved on to a position at the BC Assessment Authority. During retirement, Gerald and Anne loved to travel and golfed their way around the world.
In his 89 years, Gerald was a highly independent individual and a true gentleman. He was a devoted companion to his soul mate, Anne, who will miss him terribly. Gerald was friendly to all he met and will be fondly remembered by his family and friends for his great sense of humour. Grandpa Gerry will be remembered for his treats and especially his tasty morning porridge. He always enjoyed a good visit and preferred, “come back when you can stay a while” to good-bye.
The family would like to thank the nursing staff at Mountain Lakes Seniors Community for their compassionate and loving care of Gerald and support to Anne over the past few months. A special thanks to Dr. Jim Noiles for being a true friend to Gerald. A memorial mass was held on Tuesday, August 3rd, 2010 at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate. Internment will follow at Nelson Memorial Park. Messages of condolence may be expressed at www.thompsonfs.ca.

Dear Annie and Family
On behalf of the Woolridges and Allwoods in Bermuda, I would like to convey our sincere condolences on the passing of Gerry. We have fond memories of his visits to Bermuda – especially the gala evening at Government House which the Marions graciously attended with Annarita and Marcia’s friends and work colleagues.

From: Mathilde Klassen
Relation: Long ago friends

Dear Anne, Just this minute I read about Gerry’s death through the Nelson Star. I am very sorry to learn about this and my thoughts went straight to you. Had I known I would have gone to the funeral Mass. However, I do feel for you. Losing one’s beloved spouse is difficult to accept and to live without him. You will, by the grace of God, and the strengths He has given you and which you have nurtured over the years, be able to eventually live with peace in your heart. In the meantime, may you have moments of peace and a desire to live on. You have certainly enjoyed each other and had a very fruitful life together. My prayers are for your well being in this time of sadness and loss. It was long ago that we and our children were friends, but I remember it well, and I have good memories. I assume you were/are living in your same house not far from us on the North Shore. I usually think of you people when I cycle by. Love, Mathilde
