Glen Victor White

March 28, 1920 - December 9, 2010

After several months of serious health challenges, Glen passed away peacefully at Kootenay Lake Hospital on December 9, 2010, at the age of 90.
Glen was predeceased by his parents, William and Gyda (Tinker) White, his brothers Jack, Wesley and Gordon, his sisters Myrtle, Beth and Hazel and his first wife Villa White. Glen is survived by his son Jack (Josie) of Townsville, Australia, daughter Geraldine of Brantford, Ontario, son Dan of Hamilton, Ontario, nephews Harry (Joyce) of Mission, BC and Bill of Clinton, BC, niece Susan of Powell River, BC, Step-daughter Nancy of Nelson, BC, grandchildren, Ron, Ken, Shane, Ben, Tracey and Lisa, and great grandchildren Kendra, Kelsey, Jaime and Arcadia.
Glen was born on March 28, 1920 at home near Girvan, Saskatchewan. He attended public school in Girvan and then worked on the family farm. In 1943 Glen moved to Trail to work in the smelter and in 1944 moved to Nelson to work at Boeing Aircraft which was then located in the Civic Center. After the war he worked for CP Rail until 1980. Glen was active in the labour movement on the railway, holding office and attending conferences as away as Florida.
Glen enjoyed playing with the Nelson Kiltie Pipe Band and was their Drum Sergeant for many years. Remembering his time with the band always brought a smile to his face and a proud description of their competition results.
Glen’s hobbies also included hunting, shooting, and hand loading, and he was a lifetime member of the Nelson District Rod and Gun Club.
Glen moved to his Blewett farm in 1974 and when he retired from CP Rail followed his dream to be a full time horse breeder and trainer. Success followed success and he became known as an accomplished and respected horseman. It was truly his passion in life and he was a familiar sight riding or driving horse and cart up and down the roads and trails of Blewett. Through the years he also generously helped many young and not so young people get started with riding and driving horses. Glen particularly liked the Arabian horse breed and his pride and joy was his Arabian stallion “Marque”. They could be seen sometimes in a parade, sometimes on a long trail ride and sometimes out to the Dam Inn for a beer or two with friends.
Glen raised or assisted with raising three families during his lifetime, and those children as well as all who benefited from his influence while young hold a very special and honoured place in their hearts for him, whatever might be the title of their relationship.
As Glen matured over the years he became more and more deeply kind to one and all, generously and thoughtfully dispensing his great wealth of knowledge and wisdom to those who sought his advice. He enjoyed his friends, valued them highly, and felt particularly loved and respected to have so many visit during the last months of his life.
Glen will be deeply missed and affectionately remembered by many.
Cremation has taken place and there will be a Celebration of Glen’s Life at the Nelson District Rod and Gun Club on January 15th from 3:00pm to 7:00pm.
Anyone wishing to may send a donation to Nelson District Rod and Gun Club, PO Box 16, Nelson, BC V1L 5P7 or Kootenay Lake Hospital, 3 View Street, Nelson, BC V1L 2V1.

I am sure Glen’s passing will be felt not only by my family, but by the whole community of Blewett and surrounding area. Glen road the loop daily for many years, when he rode by my Mom’s (Betty Troyan) she was usually sitting on her deck and they would always exchange a hello. If Mom wasn’t on her deck, Glen would stop at my driveway and say “Cathi, your Mom wasn’t on her deck when I rode by, you better give her a call, and if by chance Glen didn’t ride by, my Mom would phone and say “Cathi, Glen didn’t come by today, you better give him a call! Nice to have those checks in the neighbourhood. So many fond memories of visits to his farm to see a newborn horse, many horse and cart drives around the area and all out, just a lot of good fun. Glen, I miss you already! Cathi

To all of Glen’s friends and family my heart and prayers go out to you. He was a wonderful man that many will cherish forever. He taught myself and others so much about horses and life. Rest in Peace Glen. Yvette Shukin (Koehle)

Relation: Through my Auntie: Cathi Bivar

My greatest memories are of Mr White allowing me to ride his horse Sash. She was an awesome horse that would bend down to allow you to mount. Later he shared his secret of how he trained her to perform that particular trick so I, in turn, could train my horse to do it too. He was a kind and generous man!
