Gwenda Ann Stafford

September 18, 1949 - March 19, 2012

Gwenda Ann was born on September 18, 1949, in New York City, to Rose and Martin Carty. She graduated from Newtown High School, and attended a city college for a short while. She soon followed her inner voice to San Francisco, Vancouver, Galiano Island, and back to Vancouver. She married Steve Stafford, and had their daughter, Alexis. After that, she lived in Calgary, a variety of locations in the lower mainland, and in White Rock. For the last seven years she lived in Nelson.
Gwen was always looking to improve the quality of life in her community, and often pestered politicians and bureaucrats until they changed policies, laws, and ordinances. Most recently, Gwen’s mission had been to bring peace and quiet to the streets of Nelson by removing the all-intrusive back-up beepers from commercial vehicles, and replacing them with more environmentally friendly ones that only people actually in close proximity can hear, not those who are five blocks away!
Astrology was Gwen’s passion in life, and there are very few people who have the same depth of knowledge or ability to interpret and apply that knowledge for the benefit of others. Gwen was always looking for ways to help others understand their own intricacies.
Gwen had a gift for being able to see into people’s hearts, and knew their loves and troubles without being told. She talked to people about concerns they had, that they may not have voiced even to themselves. She gave love in great quantities. She was an Earth Mother, caring deeply and profoundly about this planet, and she lived her life according to those beliefs, recycling, feeding the birds, filling her home with green life, and eating wholesome food. She was a deeply spiritual person. She would want her friends to know that she is at peace at last, rejoining the Earth she loved so much.
Gwenda is survived by her daughter Alexis, her son-in-law David, her god-daughters Michelle and Heather, her god-son Justin, her sisters Susan and Christine, her brother-in-law Edwin, and her nephew, Thomas. She was preceeded in death by her parents, Martin and Rose.

Relation: Soul Sister

I’m lost….Dad is devastated…Gwen was and is my soul sister. Gwen is Dad’s other daughter. God puts people together for a reason. We were always connected. Just didn’t know it until we found each other. Me at 15, Gwen at 16 at a dance above the Elmwood Theatre in Elmhurst New York. From then on we all were inseparatable. I know she’s free and happy at last…but it will take us a while to stop missing her voice, her warmth, herself. Alexis know that you were always her first and utmost priority in life. Above all else. And know that you are not alone. Gwen will be at your side…always…as it should be…

My deepest and most sincere condolences to Alexis and everyone Gwenda leaves behind. Gwenda was one of the realest kindest beautiful souls that I have been honored to know for the past 20 plus years. Her spirituality gave so much to so many and her spirit lives on in all of those who she touched. Her wise words, her kind heart and her loving humor and quirky ways will always leave a smile on my face and heart. God Bless you on your journey Gwen and see you on the other side!
