Isabel Mary Miller

May 25, 1933 - March 5, 2021

Isabel Mary Miller (Power) passed away peacefully on March 5, 2021, at the age of 87. She is lovingly remembered by her sister Magdalene, brother Charles, sister-in-law Mena, and cousin Margaret, as well as her children Sheila (Ralph), Paul (Nancy) and Janet (John).

She will be dearly missed by her beloved grandchildren Kat, Emily, Lindsey, Jessie, James and Will, and precious great-grandchildren Zoe, Kyle, Logan, Finnigan, Maeve, Teo and Luka.

Isabel’s many nephews and nieces fondly recall her generosity and encouragement, her jokes, and fierce loyalty to the Montreal Canadiens.

Isabel is predeceased by her parents and 7 siblings, as well as her husband James Francis Miller (1976) and her son James (1964).

Isabel’s career in office administration began in the 1950’s, in her hometown of St. John’s, NL. She enjoyed a 14-year sabbatical as a homemaker before resuming full-time work for the federal government in North Bay, ON. Upon her retirement she moved to Victoria, BC, where she delighted in hosting visitors and “never shovelling snow again.”

During her travels as a military wife and through her work, Isabel made life-long friendships with people from many regions. She was a dedicated correspondent and sent dozens of handwritten notes and letters every month, often with annotated newspaper clippings included. Despite her illness she put her lengthy Christmas card list into action in 2020.

Isabel was a good neighbour who generously supported worthy causes in every community she called home, serving as a Girl Guide leader and church volunteer, as well as sharing her famous homemade bread.

As per her wishes, cremation has taken place and internment will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery in North Bay at a later date. Those wishing to make a donation in Isabel’s memory are invited to consider Covenant House or local food bank.

Sheila, Paul, Janet and your families. It was very sad to hear of Isabel’s passing. She was such a joy to be around. Her sense of humour was infectious. We spent many hours talking and laughing. There were tears of laughter and joy also. She told many stories of you all when you were growing up. She loved all of you so very much, also the grand and great grand kids. She took great pride in your accomplishments. Her memory will keep everyone who knew her smiling. Treasure the memories you all have of her. She will be forever missed and truly loved. May she fly high with the angels and all the family and friends who have gone before her. Rest I peace Isabel❤️

Paul, Sheila, and Janet and your families, we were so sorry to hear of your mom’s passing. She put up quite a fight. She was in good hands there in Nelson according to her many calls from Janet’s. We enjoyed her company during her last stint here in Logy Bay/ St. John’s. We spent many special occasions having meals together here at our place. If it wasn’t a “special” occasion, it became one. Reminiscing about old memories then making new ones. We laughed a lot at the stories told from years back as well as more recent ones. She relayed stories of you all from your younger days. That brought a big smile to her face. When her grandchildren visited her here, she made a point of having them meet us. Family being forefront in her mind and heart, she wanted relatives to be acquainted with each other. After she returned to Victoria, she kept in constant touch with us with a phone call if not every week then every other. That’s something we’ll certainly miss. But We hope you’ll take comfort in great memories of her and the thought that she’s at rest and in a better place. I know we will. May she rest in peace. Steve, Debbie and Stephen

Sheila, Kat, Emily, Paul and family, Janet and family. We are very sorry to hear your Mother and Nanna has passed away. She always brought laughter to the table with her wonderful stories at my mother’s house. She had a keen sense of humour that was appreciated by all. So many years ago and it still stands out to me the sheer delight she found in her grandchildren; just doing and saying what children do. Your Mother and Nanna was a wonderful lady. We are thinking of you.

Sheila, Paul, Janet, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We are sorry to hear about the recent loss of your Mother and Nanna. We spent many good times with her around my Mom and Dad’s dinning room table. She always had a joke or story to tell. She was a very kind and caring woman. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Our thoughts are with you.

Relation: Friend

Dear Sheila, Paul, Janet and families,

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the passing of your wonderful mother. She was such a dear friend to me through the years. Those years working together at the base in North Bay were without doubt the best, as each day was filled with jokes, laughter and hilarious stories. We were so fortunate never to lose touch after her retirement and we would get together when she would visit North Bay. Although we only spoke once or twice a year, I’m sure you know our conversations were lengthy. She was so very proud of all of you and spoke so highly of the grandkids. I will forever keep her memory close to my heart and will certainly break out in laughter on those occasions.

This is sad news beyond compare. My heartfelt condolences go out to Sheila,Paul and Janet. I had the opportunity to work with Isabel (Izzy) for five years in the Base Technical Services Office. I don’t think one day passed without someone praising her secretarial abilities and enjoying her infectious smile and humor. She was a wonderful person. Down to earth and true to her Newfoundland heritage. RIP Izzy.

From: Ethel Horne
Relation: A very precious friend

I met Isabel when she came to Red Deer for a year so that she could spend time with
Paul , Nancy and her two grand-daughters. We worked evenings together at the
Pines Community School where space was rented for work-shops and programs.
It never took us any time to become friends. It seemed like we had always known
each other. Often, we would walk and end up at Phil’s Pancake House for coffee
and a burger. We trusted each other completely and anything that was shared
by either one of us remained confidential. I loved Isabel’s stories of growing up
in Newfoundland and I loved her wonderful letters.
She had an absolute gift for writing.
When Isabel moved to Victoria, our friendship still remained the same. We would
talk on the phone and write letters, and send emails.
I am blessed to have had Isabel in my life. A friend like Isabel only comes once in
a lifetime. She will always have a special place in my heart.
