John Rutherford Richardson
June 27, 1924 - September 26, 2017
Tribute
It is with great sadness that the family of John Rutherford
Richardson, known as “Rud” to his
friends, announces his passing on
September 26, 2017, at the age of
93 in Nelson British Columbia.
Rud was pre-deceased by the
love of his life Laura in August of
- Rud will be lovingly missed
by his daughter Karen, son-in-law
Bruce and grandchildren Lauren and Ian, cousins Brent and
Charlotte Richardson, Pam Hierlihy and close friends Wendy
Gibson, Chris Smith, Jenna, Reese and Riley.
Rud was born on June 27th, 1924 in the small town of Ochre
River Manitoba. It is also where he met and eventually
married his high school sweet heart Laura, on July 16th of
- He joined the Canadian Military during World War II.
After the war, they traveled North America and Europe with
the Canadian Military until 1974 when they retired in Comox.
Rud worked as a civilian auditor for the Department of
National Defense until 1984.
Rud will be missed for his sense of humour, infectious laugh,
his love of children and his ability to fix almost anything
including the bumper on the motor home twice.
Karen’s buddies will remember “Ruddy Buddy Beer” and
happy hour at the Richardson’s, a tradition that continued
until he entered care. The fishing stories with Howie and Ken,
and the loud outfits that he wore while cutting the grass will
not be soon forgotten.
Rud will be remembered for his dedication to the community.
Both he and Laura worked with the child identification
network that created the data base to prevent lost and
missing children in association with the Wing in the 1990’s. He
was one of the founders of Glacier Greens Golf Club and he
spent many hours volunteering at the Comox United Church.
Rud also spent many afternoons calling Bingo to fundraise for
children’s charities.
The family would like to thank Dr. Trevor Janz and the staff
of Mountain Lakes Seniors Community for the care and
compassion that they showed for Rud over the past year.
A graveside service with family and friends will be held in July
of 2018 where he and Laura will be laid to rest beside their
parents in Ochre River Manitoba. Donations in his memory
can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of BC
or the Canadian Cancer Agency or BC Children’s Hospital
Foundation.

Our sympathy to all Laura and Rudd’s family. We knew them through Comox United Church and Cal enjoyed several pleasant visits with them along with Don Silman when it became difficult for them to attend church. A lovely couple and great example of living life happily with the love of your life.

From: Marni Fisher
Relation: Knew of him through church members.

Dearest Karen – so sad to read that your Dad has passed. I remember the good times on Strathcona Crescent and your immaculate yard and home. Your Dad was so proud of the tree in the front yard…was it a tulip tree? He always had a smile and a pleasant greeting…to me as well as Cam, Sheila, Kathy, Connie and Mike.
Your Mom and Dad were lovely people. They were good neighbours and made our street a safer, nicer, and more attractive place to live.
I send my condolences.
Nance-Ann (Kath Pettman’s Mom)
