Joseph Gilbert Emile Langevin

August 4, 1950 - July 13, 2020

Gil Langevin (Joseph Gilbert Emile)
1950 – 2020

The Nelson community has lost a gem of a man. On July 13, 2020, three weeks shy of his 70th birthday, Gil Langevin passed away after a short but furious fight with brain cancer. He leaves behind his loving wife Ruth, 3 uniquely amazing daughters, Justine (Ruben Lorenzo), Korina and Rachel, 2 grandchildren, Mattea and Lazlo, two sisters, Paulette Saltel (Ron), Jeannine Belanger (Noel), and 4 nephews.  His legacy includes his 2 well known downtown Nelson businesses, El Taco and Red Light Ramen.

Gil was born in Flin Flon, Manitoba, and moved to the Kootenays in the early 70’s. He went from hippy commune, to tree planter, to cabinet maker and finally found his passion as a restauranteur. Over the course of his life he opened and helped operate 5 restaurants, the first of which was Rosie’s Mexican Cafe on Nelson Ave in 1993. He was a generous mentor and loved to create opportunities for young people.

His sense of humour, his infectious laugh, his positive attitude, his love of food, his high level of interest in current affairs, open mindedness, tolerance, wisdom, and the sense of well-being and confidence he inspired in all those close to him are the parts of him we will always hold in our hearts. We will miss you so much Gil…we lost you too soon.

Due to Covid protocol, a celebration of his life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to extend their thanks for the kindness and care Gil received from Doctor Dharma McBride.

Relation: Friends for 47 years

Gil, i am so saddened to learn of your passing. We first met in Riondel in 1973 and immediately connected and recognized each other as a true friend. Even though we did not hang out together every time we met the same warm and caring feelings were there. We will not meet in person again but your kind and open spirit will remain with me. Thank you for being my friend

Relation: Old Friend

So sorry to hear of Gil’s passing. We were best of friend growing up as teenagers in Winnipeg and later in our early twenties in the Kootenays. We shared many lasting experiences through sports, school and girls and parties. Later in B.C we fell in love with the mountains and Kootenay lake and lucky Gil stayed and made a life there. I think I saw him last in the nineties when I visited my mom in Nelson. He was always laughing and enjoying life. I have so many great memories of our childhood that I am thinking about now and enjoying all over again. Rest easy old friend. You will be missed. Thanks for the memories.

Relation: I did not know him personally, but know Ruth, and Korina.

Dear Ruth, and family, I was saddened to hear of the loss of your husband and father. You did lose him too soon. I am so sorry for your loss. While I didn’t know him personally, i admired his work ethic, and was grateful for the simple, nourishing and delicious food he created for Nelson diners.

To Ruth and the entire Langevin family especially Justine, Korina and Rachel:
We were so very sorry to hear of Gil’s passing in the Nelson Star. He was a real light and such a positive contributor to our community – a veritable communitarian who worked hard and greeted us all with smiles and chuckles as he did! He will be dearly missed, and fondly remembered by so many of us here in town. He was taken from you much much too soon. No doubt his Spirit will always be right there when you need it; such is the power of those we love and then lose. Our sincere condolences, you are such a lovely family and our hearts are with you. Warmly, the Pearkes-Fernandez household (Ahna, Tim and Nevé)

From: Ross and April Klatte
