Josephine Josie Bourgeois
May 12, 1933 - November 6, 2019
Tribute
Josephine Bourgeois was born in New Denver, BC, on May 12, 1933 and passed away in Nelson on November 6, 2019.
In 1951 during her working career she was employed at the Land Titles offices in Nelson and Vancouver. In 1954 she returned to Nelson, transferring to Forest Service.
On May 14, 1955 she married Joe Bourgeois. They lived in South Slocan for 52 years, where she was employed as the first school secretary at Mount Sentinel in March 1964 when the school’s first office opened. In 1988 she retired to join her husband Joe, in his retirement from West Kootenay Power. They have enjoyed traveling in Canada, USA, Europe and went on five cruises.
In 2002 they moved to Taghum for 11 years, enjoying their new home. Josephine was a member of the Catholic Women’s League. Her empathy towards elderly shut-ins found her visiting many people in their homes and care facilities.
Josephine was predeceased by husband Joe in 2011, parents John & Bernice Stonoski and brother John. She is survived by 2 children: Ron (Pam) Bourgeois of Madison, WI, granddaughters Nicole & Shay. Christine (Doug) LePage of Nelson, grandchildren Stuart (Nadine) & great granddaughter Stella of Kamloops. Renee (Matt) Houston & great granddaughter Myla and grandson Jude of Vancouver. Sister-in-law Hilda Stonoski of Chilliwack, Ed (Bev) Stonoski of Langley, and many nieces & nephews.
A mass of Christian burial will be held at Cathedral of Mary Immaculate on November 12, 2019 at 10:30am with interment in the Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to Kootenay Lake Hospital Foundation or CWL would be appreciated.
Thank you,
Ron Bourgeois & Chris LePage

Ron and Christine, I am so sorry to hear of your Mom’s passing. She was a constant in the community of South Slocan and was gracious about including me in visits with the Village ladies. My deepest sympathies.

Relation: Schools Connection
Josephine would sometimes substitute as a school secretary at the elementary school at which I worked. We were surprised one day by a visit from Joe and Josephine at the chemo clinic in B.C. Children’s Hospital when our son was there undergoing treatment. They’d brought a big paper bag of fresh apples. They were a sight for sore eyes, a much-welcome bit of home. It was pleasant and easy to visit with Josephine whenever we ran into each other in Nelson.

Sorry to hear that Josephine is gone. She was a lovely person. I am glad she may again be reunited with Joe and maybe Joe’s nephews Raymond and Gilbert are there too. I knew Josephine through family gatherings at Denis and Sandy Helbecque’s place in Bonnington, and really enjoyed talking to both her and Joe over the years. Josephine was always glad to chat at the grocery store or downtown or anywhere I ran into her. I will really miss those smalltown discussions where we caught up on one another’s lives and family happenings. Peaceful travels, Josephine.
