Keith Francis Haskins

Date of Death: January 9, 2019

Francis “Keith” Haskins, passed away January 9, 2019 in the Nelson Palliative Care Unit. At 86 years of age, a new resident of the Passmore Seniors Lodge, in Passmore, BC, he was quick to make friends and build into his new community. A “Celebration of Life” service will be held in his honour January 19 at 11 am at the Junction Covenant Church, 2840 Eden Road, South Slocan, BC.

Keith was born August 25, 1932 in Neepawa, Manitoba to Rev. Frank and Hazel Haskins. He married Joyce Pickard on August 31, 1955 in Brandon, Manitoba.

Keith’s formal education included a BA from Acadia University and an Education Certificate and courses from the Universities of Manitoba and British Columbia, as well as the Baptist Leadership Training School in Calgary. He taught in public schools and First Nations/Inuit schools in Manitoba, British Columbia, Alberta and the Northwest Territories. He also taught for two years in Libya.

Keith was a good father to Kathy McKenzie (Don), Terry Haskins, Ken Haskins (Diane) and a proud grandfather of Lisa Johns (Daniel), Vanessa and Isabel McKenzie, and Jesse and Risa Haskins. He was a brother to Donna Baker and Bruce Haskins(deceased) and fun-loving uncle to numerous nieces and nephews.

Keith loved all kinds of sports. He incurred several broken noses in basketball, and continued his affair with sports by playing old-timers hockey, receiving ‘Most Seasoned Player’ in one tournament and down-hill ski instructing into his 70’s. His love of the outdoors, hunting and fishing took him on many adventures all over Western and Northern Canada.

Keith will be fondly remembered by friends and family as a loving father. He is also highly memorable for his generosity and quick dry wit, his dedication to his students and the different cultures they belonged to. He will be greatly missed but, especially by his beloved beagle, Gizmo.

Sad to see uncle Keith go. A person who always lived life to the fullest. He added so much adventure to my life with skiing at Apex. What a lot of patience and kindness as he shared his love of skiing with me, a bumbler for sure. Taking us skating out on the lake near Clinton was such a wonderful experience of ice and snow and the campfire comfort. Many blessings for all of you in the family.

From: Carleen Smith
Relation: He was my 7th grade teacher.

Through 12 yrs of school, he was the most compassinate and understanding teacher I ever had. He will be sorely missed by many. RIP Mr. Haskins.
