Tribute
FILBERT, Leonard Casimir
13 May 1942 to 14 February 2017
It is with deep sadness we announce
the passing of Len Filbert on Feb 14, 2017 after a short
but courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Len was
born in Brightstone Manitoba, but his many travels lead
him to Nelson in 1983.
Survived by his loving wife Catherine of 50 years, his
children Karen, Carol, Dorothy (Brent) and John and
cherished granddaughters Brettiney and Danielle. Also
survived by his sisters Connie (Jim) and Linda (Elliot) of
Winnpeg, brother-in-law Jim (Bonnie) of Langley and
their families. Len leaves nieces, nephews and cousins in
various cities in Canada, the USA and Ireland.
Len started his career with the R.C.N. serving as a
mechanic and diver on various ships and submarines.
Upon leaving the navy he worked as a millwright in
various locations in BC, the Yukon and Fort McMurray.
In 1983, he settled his family on the North Shore of
Kootenay Lake where he and Catherine owned and
operated Kokanee Park Marine Ltd. until retiring in
2004. In his early retirement years, he kept busy working
traffic control for several companies. But was always
working on his retirement dream on the North Shore
and in recent years he joined the Nelson Lions Club and
Nelson Tram Society. Len was always there for all of us
with helpful advice and willing to roll up his sleeves and
help however he could to get the job done.
At his request, there will not be a service. Cremation
has taken place and he will be interred in Brightstone
Manitoba. A gathering will be held later in the year to
celebrate Len’s life. To quote Len’s pragmatic but whimsy
sense of humor “I’ve had a good run.”
Thank you to Megan Johnson of Thompson Funeral
Service who has been entrusted with cremation
arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations can be
made to St Joseph’s School, the Nelson Lions Club
or Nelson Tram Society.
