Tribute
MARY DAVIES April 23rd 1929 – December 16th 2021
It is with sadness we announce the passing of our beloved Mom, Nanna, and Aunt on
December 16th 2021 at Poplar Ridge in Trail BC at age 92. She is survived by her only child,
daughter Jackie (Patrick), grandchildren Robert (Kristina), Janine, great grandchildren Myelle,
Tyre, and nephews John (Norma) Julian (Irene) and niece Judy (Neal) who were like her own.
She was predeceased by her loving husband Denzil (2009) after 62 yrs of marriage, infant
daughter Julia Ann and infant son.
Mary was born in Pontardawe, West Glamorgan, Wales April 23, 1929 to Jemima and Daniel
Evans, the third of four siblings. At 17 she met the love of her life Denzil and was married Oct
31, 1946. In 1957, missing Denzil’s sister and brother-in-law, they left their home country and
followed them to Canada. Leaving from Liverpool on the ship Corinthia, they arrived in Quebec
before traveling by train to Edmonton. A year later they celebrated the birth of their daughter
Jackie. Mary’s life purpose has always been her family which she looked after with the utmost
of love. Mary was also a dedicated employee for over twenty years as manager of Jane
Brooks Bridal Shop. In later years, not to be left behind she took up golf in self defence, joining
her family as members at Glendale G & CC. She was also a constant companion at Jackie’s
golf tournaments whether as a spectator or caddying.
In 1983 Denzil retired and they moved to Vernon to be closer to family. An in-law suite was built
and they became a large part of all our lives, especially the grandchildren. They were often
seen picking them up from school, watching Rob’s numerous sporting events, or Janine’s
horse shows, doting on them constantly. They had many long term friends in Vernon and
enjoyed travelling with them to Mexico, Palm Springs, and Arizona. Golfing became Mary’s
passion as she played regularly, remaining an avid club member for 30 years. She loved
knitting and the grandchildren were recipients of many sweaters. Her other love was walking
her beloved Pomeranians, Delilah and Divot.
In her final years she made the decision to move to Nelson. This gave her an opportunity to
spend more time with family and also see her great grandchildren grow. Her face lit up every
time she saw them as did mine seeing how wonderful they were with her.
Mom was loved by her many friends of all ages and will be remembered fondly for her Welsh
cakes. I was always the most popular girl at school when I brought out perfect tin-foil wrapped
packages from my lunch bag. Everyone knew I had Welsh cakes! A golf trip was never
complete without a package for each friend. Christmas baking won’t be quite the same either
without the laughter and chaos of her bossing Judy and I around…telling us how it’s done. Of
course the story of her life would be incomplete without mentioning her many Welsh
superstitions (no new shoes on the table and no New Year calendar allowed up before noon, to
name a few) which I’m sure will be carried on through generations. These moments will be
missed.
Special thank you to Anne Dickinson, Anne Robertson, DeAnna Marchand, Fred & Maureen
Turner plus Katie and Nathan for your help and special friendship which meant the world to her.
Mom had many health issues in her later years, but her persistent stubbornness, and will to live
was like no other. In the end however, dementia proved to be the most unkind. The family
would like to thank Dr. Waldron of Vernon for his 30 years of compassionate care, Dr.
McKechnie in Nelson for his kind care during her final years, and Poplar Ridge Extended Care
in Trail for their support during her end of life stage.
While I feel immense sadness with our loss, I must celebrate the long life she enjoyed, and hold
dear to me the many wonderful memories we had. Mom…you are now home with Dad.
If you so wish Donations may be made to the Heart, Kidney or Alzheimers Society. Due to the
situation with CoVid a celebration of her life will be at a later date.
