Marianne Mare Louise Hartnett

Date of Death: September 1, 2022

Marianne “Mare” Louise Hartnett passed away peacefully on Thursday September 1st, 2022 in Nelson, British Columbia. She was one of four children born to Richard and Marilyn Powers in Brantford, Ontario.

Mare was a registered nurse for over 40 years, practicing in three provinces. Her passion for her profession was clear to any colleague or patient she encountered.

Mare’s love for nursing was only surpassed by her love for her family. She is survived by her son, Gregory Sexsmith; her daughters, Abigail Roy (Michael), Laura Hartnett (David); and her precious grandchildren, Bo and Leo Roy. She will be missed by Michael Hartnett and siblings Richard Powers, Elaine Pinkus (Marc) and Patrick Powers (Anne).

In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to the Canadian Association of MAiD Assessors and Providers as Mare was an advocate and strong believer in death with dignity.

A “Mare”morial will be planned at a later date.

I am so grateful that the universe conspired to cross my path with Mare’s, no matter how short a time. Little did I know that the lady who brought her kids in for their hair, and would become my client, would also become someone whom I would develop a friendship with and love dearly. Mare’s smile could brighten the darkest of days, and her laughter was as infectious as it was genuine and heartfelt. We shared many laughs, and not a few tears, over the years. Mare had such compassion for people, and was genuinely interested in their well-being. Whenever someone she didn’t know would be in the salon at the same time, she always introduced herself, and made fast-friends with them. My salon was always extra happy on days where she was booked.

I have so many memories of Mare, but I will always remember the last time I did her hair, before she left to begin her new life to be closer to her family. When I refused payment for her last haircut, because it seemed like the most fitting farewell, Mare graciously accepted, and wrapped her me in her arms. She started to cry so hard, and say what she wanted to say, but it just wouldn’t come out. We said our very teary goodbyes, and later that day I received a message from her, putting into words what she was struggling to say that day. I’ve carried that message with me in my heart ever since. She had a way of making you feel seen, without feeling exposed, and making you feel validated and loved.

Abby, Greg, Laura, Mike, Bo, Leo and all the family, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. I know that the memories you have of this remarkable woman will bring you comfort and healing in the days to come.

The sun has shone a little less brightly since I learned of Mare’s passing, but I am so grateful to have called this incredible woman my friend.

This has been very sad news. I worked with Mare for many years in the emergency room at St. Joe’s in Ontario she was an inspiration to me. Greg, Abby and Laura I am so sorry that you have to feel this pain right now. You were the soul of her life she shared very many stories with me about you all and you were in our heart always. I never met her grandchildren but we talked about them often. I hope she is sleeping with the Angels right now and know she will forever be with you. In this difficult time I hope you all find a way to comfort yourselves and my thoughts are with you.😔

I will never forget the first time I met Mere. I could only stand back and watch in awe and amazement at this larger than life personality. The huge smile, the infectious laughter, the wonderful energy she exuded…. So full of life.

I was heartbroken to hear the news of Mare’s passing. I worked with her for several years at St Joes’s. Both on the Chest Unit and Emerg. I loved her immediately. She was an amazing nurse, a beautiful human who laughed all the time, a friend and confidante when I needed someone to vent to about life or work. Sometimes at work, we would just have to look at each other and know what the other was thinking. I myself moved out to BC a couple of years ago and she was one of the first people I messaged about my move, knowing that she was here also. I am so so sorry for your loss and thinking of you all. I hope her gift of laughter helps you through this difficult time.

Mare, you were such an easy person to be around. You were quick to laugh, honest, funny and very well read. I’ll never forget the sound of your infectious laugh, or how obvious your love was for Laura, Greg and Abby. You left a lasting impression on me, and you no doubt made life better for countless others as a nurse. I hope that wherever you go, there is a library. You are missed.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It was obvious Mare loved her family so much. We always knew when Mare was in the room. Her personality was so big in an amazing way. When I came to work and saw Mare was there that day, I felt joyful. She was one of the kindest most honest one I have known. One hell of a Nurse! Gone to soon. ❤️

I am so saddened by the news of Mare’s passing. There are no words that are great enough to possibly describe Mare; she was one of a kind and irreplaceable! I was lucky enough to meet Mare (“like the horse!”) at St. Joseph’s Healthcare in the emergency department. Mare was first my coworker, then my office partner, schedule mentor and then became a true treasured friend. I look up to and admire the person she was. I would frequently text her “WWMD” (what would Mare do?), and she would provide her supportive, wise, genuine, heartfelt words to ease all of my worries!
Greg, Abby, Laura, Bo and Leo thank you for sharing your mom/grandma with me! You were her world! I hope you smile as you cry, allowing your memories to bring you some comfort.
My dear Mare, I will love you always and miss you for the rest of my life.
