Marshall Marsh Severyn

Date of Death: November 20, 2018

Marshall (Marsh) Severyn

Passed away on the 20th of November 2018 at Weatherby Place in White Rock, BC. He was 87. He had suffered a stoke as a result of an earlier illness and finally went to sleep with his loving family surrounding him.

Marsh was born on October 4th, 1931 in Vegreville Alberta to John and Ann Severyn. In 1951 he met his wife Mary Morrison who was a clerk at the CPR station and they married in October a year later. They returned to live in Nelson where Marsh continued his hockey career with the WIHL Maple Leafs. They had 5 sons together.

Marsh and Mary loved Nelson. His employment started with the Nelson Police in 1955 and he worked with the police for the next 5 years. He then went on to a 27 year career with BCAA eventually retiring with the title of Provincial Sales Manager after being transferred to the coast in 1978. His retirement lasted only a year when he became a realtor for the next 13 years in North Delta and Surrey.

An exceptional athlete, Marsh played both hockey and baseball. He played Jr. hockey in Wetaskiwin and Calgary and Sr. hockey in Anchorage and Nelson. He coached minor baseball and hockey and won the BC Bantam Championship in 1969. He also won the Savage Cup as the coach of the Nelson Maple Leafs in 1970-71.

His other passion, baseball, led him to play Sr. Baseball in the Saskatchewan baseball league and attended the Brooklyn Dodgers camp in 1950. As a pitcher he was assigned to their ‘AAA’ affiliate in El Paso, Texas.

His catholic faith was very important to him and he served on the St. Joseph School Board and the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate Parish counsel in Nelson.

Marsh is survived by four sons; Terry of Surrey, BC, Pat (and Donna) of Nelson, BC, John (and Sharon) of Lubbock, Texas, Michael (and Paula) of Surrey BC, grandchildren Ryan, Stephanie, Elysia, Cletus, Marsha, Jamie, April, Madison, Amanda, and 7 great grandchildren. Also survived by four siblings, Leonard of Calgary, AB, Diana of Sherwood Park, AB, Doreen of Innisfree, AB and Melvin of Edmonton, AB.

Marsh was predeceased by his wife of 57 years Mary (Dec 2009) and his son Marc (Nov. 1978).

He was never shy and had a great sense of humour and would take time to talk with everyone. A real gentleman that will be dearly missed.

A Funeral Mass will be held at the Cathedral of Mary Immaculate at 813 Ward Street in Nelson on Thursday November 29th at 10:30 with interment to follow at Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery.

From: Shirley and Doug Tennant
Relation: Neighbours. Marsh and Mary and the boys lived a couple of blocks from where I grew up and Marsh was always joking about his family of 5 boys and my family of 5 girls. Something I have never forgotten about Marsh and the old neighbourhood.

Our deepest sympathy to the families left to mourn the passing of a wonderful man.

I was sorry to hear about Marsh. As a kid he coached me hockey and was a positive role model for a lot of Nelson kids. We got to know each other better when he moved to Surrey and worked as a realtor. He always had time to chat and was always interested in my family. He and Mary were fine people. My condolences to the Severyn clan.
