Maxine Rae Malacko (Morgan )

September 25, 1930 - March 26, 2021

Maxine Rae Malacko

Sept 25, 1930 – March 26, 2021

It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of our dear Mom and Grandmother, Maxine Malacko (Nanny).  Our Nanny left us peacefully at Mountain Lakes Sr. Community in Nelson on March 26th.  She was happy to be back in the beautiful Fairview neighbourhood she loved and where she worked and raised her family for many years.

Maxine spent her early years on the prairies, being born in Regina Sask. and growing up in Lethbridge Alta.  A daughter of the Great Depression, she developed a lifelong propensity for numbers and accounting that started very early while working at the bank in Lethbridge at a young age.  It was also through working at the bank that Maxine met and married a local hockey player, Shorty Malacko, who would bring her out west to Nelson to spend the rest of their lives in the glorious Kootenays.

Mom’s special flair for numbers was the hallmark of both her professional and personal life in Nelson.  She worked for many years in accounting positions at Notre Dame University and then at the Catholic Diocese where she was known for her keen eye at math and financial detail.  She raised her 3 daughters effortlessly throughout her career since the work was such a pleasure for her.  At home and in her free time, Mom loved playing cards and games of any kind with friends and family, never caring whether she won or lost, reveling only in the challenge and camaraderie. One to keep up with the times, she excelled at computer games in later years and continued learning new formats from her close friends at Lakeview Village.  Professionally, Mom’s aptitude for accounting continued, and it was not until her 80’s that she finally retired.

Mom’s greatest pleasure was spending time with her family and was an adoring “Nanny” to her grandchildren, a name that stayed with her for the rest of her life.   Nanny will be remembered for her quick wit, for being up for anything, and always open to learning something new.  She will be forever cherished for her generosity and beautiful, good nature.  We love you Nanny.

Nanny is survived by her 3 daughters Ali (Phil Wallace), Toni (Doug Knight), and Jacquie (Tony Arcuri) and 4 grandchildren; Lisa, Taylor, Kelvin, and Rohan.  She was predeceased by her lifelong partner and husband, Shorty, and her dear older brother Tom Morgan.

In keeping with the current situation, a celebration of life will be announced at a later date.  Thank-you to the outstanding Nurses and Caregivers at Mountain Lakes for their grace and compassion they showed our beloved Nanny in her final days.

The family also thanks Nanny’s many friends for their messages and notes of support.  In lieu of flowers, and if you desire, please consider a donation to KLDH.
