On Monday, August 17th, 2020, Mildred Scales passed away peacefully at the age of 99 in Nelson, BC. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Bonnie, son-in-law Ray Neumar, grandchildren – Michelle (Brian) Naka, Tracey (Russ) Brenton, great grandchildren – Jessica (Jeff) Clements, Matthew, Meghan, Jasmine, Liam and many nieces and nephews. She will also be dearly missed by her many friends including Ivan Laughton and his family.

Mildred was predeceased by her loving husband Joe of 66 years, sisters Marie, Hazel and Irene and parents Stanley and Nellie Horsman.

Mildred was born Mildred Nellie Horsman on a farm outside of Carman, Manitoba on October 28th, 1920. She had 3 older sisters. Mildred attended school at a rural school house and would ride her horse there every day. Mildred loved music and was in various musicals in high school.

On October 8th,1939 she married her sweetheart Joe Scales. In 1943 their daughter Bonnie was born. After the war Mildred had several jobs including working at the Canadian Wheat Board and then going on to work as a supervisor at what used to be called the Unemployment Insurance department with the Federal government for 20 years. Retirement began for Mildred and Joe in 1978 and they spent the next 20 years travelling and wintering in Yuma, Arizona. They lived in Winnipeg and Gimli before moving out west to Abbotsford in 1987.

Our Nana will be fondly remembered for her love of family, her passion for music, playing the organ and singing in the group Second Wind. She enjoyed golf, playing cards and was an accomplished painter. Nana had a unique quality that enabled her to make lifelong friends. Her kindness and zest for life will never be forgotten.

From: Patricia Clapp
Relation: Fellow singer in Second Winds, and Energy Medicine client.

Bonnie and family: Sending love and healing at this difficult time. My memories of Mildred are precious to me. She emanated such grace, elegance and charm. It was a delight to sing with her, and also to know her as a client… perhaps a decade ago? And she is, and always will be, a much admired role model. Blessings to You.

From: Barbara Flett
Relation: Friend

I also grew up in Carman but Mildred and I met in Abbotsford, quite shocked that both of us came from that little town. Joe and Mildred were good friends. We played a lot of cards and always enjoyed their company. Mildred was the epitome of grace and elegance. Lucky the granddaughter who gets those red shoes. A wonderful lady.
