Neil Gardner Gavin

February 17, 1933 - April 11, 2017

It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of our beloved father and friend, Neil Gavin on April 11th, 2017 at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, BC.

Neil Gardner Gavin was born on February 17th, 1933 in Kamloops, BC to parents Pearl and Samual Gavin. Neil was the eldest of four children.

Neil was a veteran of the Korean War. He was a lifelong legion member of Branch 51 in Nelson and served as President at Branch 217 in Salmo for over a decade. Neil enjoyed spending time with the youth in our community, assisting with the Sea Cadets for many years. Neil was a man of faith and served as Major with the Salvation Army.

Neil was quite an outdoors man and enjoyed many hobbies including hunting, fishing, camping and riding his motorcycle on the windy highways that surround Nelson.

This past February, Neil and the love of his life Fay celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary.

Left behind to mourn his passing is wife Fay, beloved children Cindy and Jamie, siblings Marshal Gavin, Del Mankie and nephew and best bud Lorne Swazye as well as numerous extended family and friends.

He is predeceased by his parents, son Sam and two sisters, Vivian and Dot.

A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, May 27th from 1:00pm -4:00pm at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 51, 402 Victoria Street, Nelson, BC.

From: Major Ed Ostrom
Relation: I was appointed as The Salvation Army Officer in Nelson from JUly 1997 to June 2005. Neil was The Corps Sergeant major of the Nelson Corps. Later he planted a Salvation Army Church in Salmo.

It is with sadness my wife Dorothy and I have learned of the Passing of Neil Gavin. Truly during our 8 years in Nelson Neil was a great blessing to us. IT was good to work with him and see him and his wife Faye start a small outreach Church of The Salvation Army in Salmo. Truly Neil had a pastor’s heart.

I wrote the attached Poem as my tribute to Neil.
The valiant soldier has laid his weapons down
trading them for his glorious eternal crown,
In joy, he has received “a hero’s welcome home”
in freedom heaven’s serene streets of gold, he roams.

Today Lord together our voices we raise
to give to You our heartfelt thanksgiving and praise,
For the life of Your humble servant Neil today
Who daily served You with all his heart on life’s pathway.

Husband, father, friend, guide and Pastor serving You
from the bottom of his heart in all he would do,
A molder of youth; encourager to all
very humbly and willingly obeying the Lord’s call.

He touched so many lives along life’s long pathway
lifting and encouraging so many day by day,
Lord thinking of Neil we think of faithfulness
by his service of You so many have been so richly blessed.

Come Lord of comforting compassionate grace
gently hold His loved ones in Your restoring embrace,
As they walk through this lonesome valley we pray
that You will walk beside them each step of this pathway.

May Your rod and staff now comfort them we pray
with restorative grace, each of them embrace today,
Be the sweet balm of Gilead comforting each heart
come O Lord Your loving presence to them here impart.

Ed Ostrom, May 2017.
( Major )
