Tribute

October 28th 1929 – February 7th 2021

A tribute to our Dad, a true gentleman with a generous spirit and gentle soul.

Your positive mindset and healthy lifestyle only put you in the hospital twice in your entire lifetime, a badge you wore with honour. Our Dad decided over 10 years ago to fight his Parkinson’s diagnosis with everything he had, and with positivity and dignity. He beat the odds many times and left the doubters behind in his wake; all this and with hardly a complaint. We are proud of you Dad, if anyone can be defined as resilient, it is truly you.

As a retired Geologist, this study of interest was lifelong. He picked up rocks everywhere he went to show and tell his friends and family; even known to wander from the vehicle on road trips to survey the mountain, bring back samples and share his findings.  He was able to name the mountains and valleys as we passed them by, teaching us the great history of Mother Earth. We are grateful he taught us to respect nature and the people of the land before us.

Dad always believed in equality and advocacy. In his younger years, he hired female geologists to be on his team when this was still considered a radical thing to do; in his later years he supported the environmental movement and marched for climate change well into in his 80s. Much of his retirement days were spent volunteering and supporting many causes and charities. His care and concern for others was lifelong and even shown at his care home, as he reached out to other residents, especially ones with no family of their own; so thoughtful and tender was his heart.

As a world traveller Dad had many friends across the globe. As he outlived many of his dear friends and family, we take comfort knowing he is reunited with them. In his later years we are happy Dad continued to live well, enjoying local travels of the city, lunch and dinners with friends and family, attending West Vancouver United Church, visiting the seawall, reading his many loved books and local paper, and following the stock market, another lifelong hobby.

Dad, you were strong, you were gentle, you were loving, and you were kind. You were respectful, you were steadfast. We will remember and be with you as we reflect onto nature; from the rocks that look dull on the outside, but are truly glorious on the inside, we will remember to look within, and trust in the magic of the unseen; as we look out onto the glistening water of the ocean, in which you loved to sail, our memories of you will dance and glimmer; as the breeze in the forest whispers its stories as we hike in the hills, we will remember yours, and ours together. We will continue to support causes you believed in, tell Dad jokes, fill our pockets with rocks, be creative and write; a secret gift you left us with. We love you.

We would like to acknowledge all the care and support we have had, especially in the last few years of Dads life. A special acknowledgement to Hollyburn Care staff, Dr. Devonshire, West Vancouver Library, and all the friends and loved ones who stuck with us on this journey.

Dad leaves behind his children John and Lynda, their families, as well as family and friends in BC, Alberta, Ontario and Wales. Dad will be laid to rest at home, in Nelson B.C. We will gather in the great outdoors to celebrate Dads life with family and friends when it is safe to do so.

To honour Dads life donations can be made to Parkinson’s Society of BC, The David Suzuki Foundation and the Aboriginal Front Door Society.
