Roberta Wickens (Shenfield)

February 10, 1936 - March 17, 2015

Wickens, Roberta (nee Shenfield) passed away in Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson, BC on March 17th, 2015 after several years of escalating health problems. As Roberta requested, cremation followed without a service.  To celebrate her life, her family has been having informal visits and welcome these at any time.

Roberta will be greatly missed by her children; Dixie Lee (James), John (Rita), Ted Jr. and Christine (Daniel); brother, Bill Shenfield and sister Noreen Johnson; grandchildren, Jennifer, Devin, Amy, Christine, Kayla, John Jr., Sarah and Aaran; great grandchildren, Taitum, Ryder, Mason, Elaine and Aiden; in laws, Peggy and Cliff, Thomas, Carmen and Margaret Wickens, Walter Smith, Marie Wickens and close family friend Derrick Williams.

Roberta was predeceased by her husband Ted in 2010, and parents Robert and Eileen (Florence) Shenfield. Roberta was born in Fernie, BC on February 10th, 1936. She got married to Ted Wickens on May 1st, 1954 and spent her first twelve married years in Snake Creek, Quebec and Mattawa, Ontario. Roberts treasured the many close friends made during this time. In 1966 they moved their growing family to Nelson, BC where she resided until her passing.

Everyone who knew Roberta described her as “amazing”. She was a multi talented, hard working woman who could set up a hunting camp, build a chicken coop, cook a meal for twenty, sew clothes, knit and repair almost anything. She could hunt, fish, trap, farm and garden which was her passion. Her green thumb and ability to grow anything was well known. Roberta worked hard on many jobs to support her family along with Ted. She helped manage a hunting and fishing club, cooked in restaurants, worked on hospital cleaning staffs and for many years was the only lady logger in the Nelson area.

Roberta was artistic and creative in all aspects of her life. She was good at drawing, oil painting and photography which she loved.

Roberta was amazing even when her health failed. She was determined to be independent in her own home which was very important to her. Even though she was handicapped, she split firewood, did home canning and looked after her green house which was her passion. Roberta was good and kind to everyone. Her coffee pot was always on and she loved to visit and tell stories of her interesting life adventures. We know she kept the Trail Hospital staff entertained on her dialysis days.

Roberts greatest talent was that she was a devoted mother who always put her family’s needs before her own. She instilled the virtues of kindness, generosity, honesty, reliability, respect and doing what is right. Because of her, our family is very close and has a strong bond. We are very proud to be called “Roberta’s family”. She was truly “amazing”. We love you, Mom.
