Ronald Ellswood Cox
April 23, 1920 - May 20, 2016
Tribute
Ron passed away at Kootenay Lake Hospital at the age of 96 years. He was born in Tredegar, Wales one of seven children to Thomas & Margaret Cox. The family immigrated to Canada when Ron was ten.
He is survived by his loving wife Sheila of 69 years, daughters Vivian(David) Postlethwaite of Nelson, Ronda(Ken) Houlind of Cranbrook, and Karen(Charles) Smart of Maple Ridge. Ron was predeceased by his son, Spence(Sandy) Cox of Nelson.
Ron had eight grand children and numerous great grandchildren.
He was a world War II veteran a member of the Canadian Scottish Regiment and served overseas in Great Britain prior to the June 6, 1944 allied invasion of Normandy at Juno beach. He fought his way across Europe. Towards the end of the war he was wounded and then taken prisoner near Kleve, Germany. He was placed in Stalog X1, a P.O.W. camp for 40 days. Ron was marched toward the Russian border only to be turned back by artillery fire and finally liberated by allied forces.
Ron enjoyed fishing, hunting and the outdoors. Ron and Sheila were square dancers for many years and he loved to go to opera listen to the music as he would say to recharge his batteries.
We would like to thank Dr. Jim Noiles, the doctors and nurses at Kootenay Lake Hospital for their care.
As an expression of sympathy family and friends may make a donation to The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #51 or to the Heart & Stroke Foundation or to a charity of choice.

From: Mandy Root
Relation: I was a server at the Legion
My deepest condolences go out to the Cox family. Ron was a wonderful man and I always looked forward to him and Sheila coming into the Legion for a visit. Ron and Sheila were always so sweet and in love and that was an inspiration to me. They always had kind words for me and caring sentiments. Each Rememberance Day ceremony I eagerly looked for Ron and was always so happy to see him standing proud with the other veterans. Ron’s humorous and mischievous words will be greatly missed. Ron and Sheila will always be in my heart and I will greatly miss Ron.

From: Arlene and Michael McMillin
Relation: friend of Vivian
Our sympathies to you and your whole family on the passing of your dad…husband… grandfather…friend. Remembering him will keep him close…. blessings in this time of transition, Arlene and Michael
