Terry Halleran

Date of Death: December 17, 2021

It is with great sadness that we announce that Terry Halleran, another Nelson eccentric, has died.  He may have tuned your piano, you may know him from the Hall Street mural, or you may have seen him vacuuming up dandelion seeds in his yard rather than using pesticides.  Any way you knew him, he was not forgettable. His involvement in the music of Nelson spans 50 years.  In the ’70’s he was involved in musicals like Oliver Twist, and in the ’80’s was a fixture at DTUC’s student pub listening to music (and drinking beer), organizing the Royal Conservatory of Music exams, running the Nelson Music Festival, participated in the Nelson Overture Society and attending numerous events at the Capitol Theatre.  He played the trombone, guitar, piano and loved singing and dancing.  One of his proudest musical accomplishment was performing in the Nelson opera, Khaos.

He had many hobbies including woodworking, old trucks, travel and motorcycles, and enjoyed collecting every item he would need to complete any project.  Some may call this hoarding but we prefer to think of it as leaving behind a yard full of imaginative and varied but ultimately unfinished dreams.  His sense of humour was often off-colour and we think he knew every word that Basil Faulty ever spoke.  He has left behind his loving wife and co-adventurer of 54 years, Chris Halleran, as well as his daughters Sarah Halleran (husband, Niels, and kids Elliot and Emily) and Katie Sullivan (husband, Brett, kids Duncan and Heath), and numerous nieces and nephews.  As well he leaves behind the many friends he would sing, dance, and joke around with (“dancing girls” and “coffee boys”). Terry left this life as he lived his life- on his own terms, surrounded by family with a joke on his lips. He was loved and will be greatly missed.

Due to COVID we will delay a celebration of life until a gathering can be planned. In lieu of flowers please consider a donation to your favorite arts related activity – buy a ticket, support an artist, attend a show in Terrys memory.

Chris and family. I’m so glad to have had the chance to speak with Terry at Radio Ave cafe only a few weeks ago. He seemed in good spirits at that time, so I am so shocked and sorry to read of his passing. He was a lovely man and you will miss him so much. Our thoughts are with you.

From: Bessie Wapp
Relation: friend of family

I’m so sorry to learn of Terry’s passing, and send my heartfelt condolences to his family. I was a piano student of Noreen’s many years ago and then came to know Terry through the Nelson performing arts community. I was very grateful when, some time after he’d officially retired, he generously fixed an issue with my piano. The last time I appeared on stage with Terry may have been in the opera KHAOS when we chorus members recognized Terry needed help to be in right place at the right time. This was no small task as he would often wander off. Several times we found ourselves waving madly from one side of backstage to the other trying to catch his attention shortly before our entrance. : ) Terry and I shared much laughter and music, and for that I am grateful. Much love to all who knew him……..xo Bessie

Terry, you made the world a brighter place, a warmer place, a place with dignity, morality, kindness, artistry, and compassion. Your eyes held it all: intensity, attention, listening, speaking truth and care. It was a real honour to know you over more than a quarter century! Dear Terry’s family, Jill and Kaspar and I will indeed light a candle for Terry and will try to our best ability to carry forward all the gifts he shared.

Relation: Instructor

Terry will be very much be missed. I always enjoyed his chats (which were much longer than his exercise times) and his sense of humour. His smile was infectious and he displayed it regularly.

Relation: Neighbour

We are so sorry to hear of Terry’s passing, Chris. He was, among many other things, a loving, smiling man…and a great neighbour.
