William Rich Richardson Brown
September 30, 1928 - September 23, 2016
Tribute
“Richard” passed away peacefully on Sept 23, 2016 at Mountain Lakes Seniors Home in Nelson with family at his side. Rich was born in Nelson on Sept 30, 1928 and lived his entire life in his beloved Nelson. He obtained a Law degree at UBC and practiced Law in Nelson at Hamilton, Brown, Nasmyth and Co. Rich also was a teacher in Nelson at the Junior High School. Rich was an artist, an avid historian and an iconic storyteller. He spent many hours researching at the local museum and was so great at sharing his knowledge with anyone. His family were some of the original settlers in Nelson and his father William was the Police Magistrate from 1921 until the mid 1950”s. The Brown family was featured in Art Joyce”s book “The Perfect Childhood”. Rich was very proud of his substantial contributions to this book. Rich was thoughtful, generous and was always ready to help someone in need. He had a great love for the family cottage at 9 mile and spent as much time there as he could. He is fondly remembered by his family as “Uncle Rich”.
He is survived by nephews, Ian (Sherie), Neil, (Coleen), Garry (Diana), Jim, Joe, and niece Sandra (Harold) and many very special great nieces and great nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, William 1955 and Nell 1986, sisters Betty 1962 and Barbara 1997, and nephew Brian 2010.
Richard’s burial will take place prior to the service at Nelson Memorial Park Cemetery at 10:00 am, followed by the Funeral which will be held at Thompson Funeral Service at 11:00am. All are welcome to attend both. Donations in his name may be made to the Nelson Museum. Many thanks to the wonderful staff at Mountain Lakes for their years of caring!

Hello Brown family: I just heard from Mom of Rich’s passing and today’s service, attended by so many. She mentioned that many of you had spent some time at the 9 mile cottages – what a perfect tribute to Rich. He is forever embedded in my memory. From his off season swims and baths in the lake, to his wonderfully mod art, to the boisterous beach bonfires – I can see his warm smile right now.
Rich was a often a very calming and sane influence around my own turbulent father, he was a caring and gentle man. I am so fortunate to have had Rich as part of my childhood and beyond. I am sure you all have fond memories of him. My heartfelt condolences, John

My family was fortunate enough to live next door to the Browns. Mrs. Brown (Richard’s Mom) was my Mom’s first friend in Nelson. They made our family feel welcome in Nelson at a time when Nelson was not always that friendly to newcomers. The Browns were a huge part of my childhood. Mr. Brown was always so kind to us as kids. I have fond memories of many birthday parties at the Browns where the attention was always on us kids and afternoons in summer at Nine Mile. Mr. Brown (it was the 70s & adults weren’t called by their first names by kids) was such a dedicated son to his Mom. Although I hadn’t seen him in many years I have nothing but fond memories of him. My deepest condolences to the family. Oddly, my father & Mr. Brown died on the same day.
