Obituary

Lees, William John (Bill)

July 7, 1934 – February 3, 2019

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of a wonderful man, Bill Lees, who passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.

Bill was born in Vancouver, B.C. and spent most of his childhood in Trail and Kelowna before moving to Vancouver Island where he entered trade school in the Automobile Mechanics Program, which laid the foundation for a lifetime of passionate work in the automobile industry including owning the Volkswagen and Subaru dealerships in Nelson.

Bill was predeceased by his adoptive parents Gladys and Mortimer Lees, his biological mother Mercy Ann McColl, his brother Arthur and sister Helen, and in 2001 his first wife Jean.

Bill is survived by his wife Sharon, 3 biological siblings, his children Karen (Barry), Diane, Wendy (Don), Donna (Paddy), John, David (Lee-Anne), Brenda, and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Bill was a member of Kiwanis in Nelson and Trail serving for over 40 years including Lt. Governor and President of both clubs plus the Nelson Housing Society.  His passion was driving!  He was interested in all cars, especially Volkswagens, and also trains.  He loved road trips, usually exploring the “less travelled” side roads.

Bill’s Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, February 25, 2019 at 1:30PM at the Nelson United Church with reception to follow at the church.  Interment to be held at a later date.

Sincere thanks for the much needed support for the family to Dr. Lee MacKay and staff at the Nelson Medical Clinic, Lia Macraild RN, and all the caregivers from Broader Horizons, Mountain Lakes and Nelson Home Support.

It was sad to me to hear of William’s demise as he was a reliable friend and support in
my various adventures with autos.

From: Mary-Jane Thiessen
Relation: Friend for 30yrs

My condolences go out to all his children and step-children. It is always wrenching to lose a parent as all of you have. I have known Bill for 30yrs. When Bill lost your mother Jean it was far too soon. I believe God saw the loneliness he suffered and sent him Shaaron. He was fortunate to have happiness and love in his life, as were all of you, for a 2nd time. He was a wonderful man in so many ways. He was so proud of you as I’m sure you must have been very proud of him!
As a Kiwanian, a personal friend, and as a mentor he was, to me, a man to be looked up to. I am so sorry for your loss but I am also very glad you all had him.

Yes, I agree that Bill was a wonderful man. Thirty-two years ago he sold me a new Subaru. I used that car to travel the Kootenay’s while I studied and practiced my nursing skills in the local hospitals. I had a long way to drive from New Denver to Selkirk College and I always felt safe in my 4Wheel drive Subaru. Bill and Jean were the friendly and service minded couple that kept me on the road.
Their daughter Karen became my good friend during the nursing school years. Bill and Jean then became friends outside the dealership, welcoming me into their home.
We wonder what a difference one person can make in this world.
I can say Bill made a difference whenever I saw him…with his smile, words of caring, and attitude of service.
Yes, a wonderful man…and I feel blessed to have known him and to learn from him how to be a ‘decent’ human being.
My condolences to all of you who loved him.

From: Natalie Petersen
Relation: Knew him from First Baptist Church and met him first at a grief support group.

Sharon my condolences on the passing of Bill. I always enjoyed seeing his smiling friendly face.
